oil leak & engine part ID 1981 240 D
My brand new (to me) 240 D has a small oil leak that appears to be coming from a 19mm bolt on the head behind the vacuum pump. The parts diagrams I've been able to look at don't have call-outs for this bolt, because it is generally hidden behind the timing chain path in the 3/4 view of the engine.
The closest thing I could find on the forum was this thread two years ago: 240D Oil Leak from bolt over Vacuum Pump But there wasn't any resolution. I can't budge it either way with a breaker bar, and I don't know whether it's a good idea to try more extreme measures. I'm mainly just curious to know what the purpose of this bolt is. In the mean time, there is a much more pressing leak from the front of the block. I'll be scouring the rest of the forum for ideas... |

If its the "bolt" I think you mean, it is how you access the "intermediate gears" that drive the oil pump. You should be able too remove it and use a crush washer. Would be good if you could circle it in the pic, just too make sure.

Sorry, I meant to mention it's the bolt with puddle of oil around it!
Thanks for the quick reply. |
