4 speed engine to Auto
 

Hey All,
I'm looking on ebay at a '83 240D euro with a 4 speed for parts. Anybody have advice on the ease of pulling the engine on that and putting it in my car ('83 240D) which has an auto transmission? i.e. are there issues with flywheel differences or problems with the torque converter?

The flexplate will bolt up using diffrent bolts. Just make sure you have the flex plate match-balanced to the flywheel that comes off the engine. Also save all the manual parts, you can sell them as a kit. Most people are converting from auto to manual.

Different length drive shafts? Different trans mounts? Which transmission are you going to use? There may be an extra line coming off the brake master cylinder for the hydraulic clutch. If you're going to stay with the auto, simply swap M/C's.

None of thses should be problems since he is just using a engine from a manual car in his automatic.

I know it is totally off subject, and I am saying this in respect to you.

thats it precisely. The tranny and driveshaft and maybe the rear diff (3.69(?)... maybe not) are sought after for conversion purposes. If you label the bolts and pieces, and mark the flywheel orientation, you won't regret it.

YOu need to have the fw from the engine you are using checked for neutral balance. If it and the fw you want to use are both neutral you are home free. be sure to mark it in its relationship to the crank. If it is not neutral then the new fw will have to be match balanced to it.

Can you clarify that issue with the flywheel please? Which one should i use? I want to keep the auto transmission that i currently have in the car. should i keep the flywheel that is currently in the car with the auto transmission? I thought the flywheel should stay with the engine, although i DO understand that if they are both neutral balance it doesn't matter.

The fw on the automatic is different from the stick flywheel.

The flywheel needs to match the engine you are using IF and only if it is not neutrally balanced.

If it turns out you need an automatic fw, I have at least two lying about. If you need a neutrally balanced one and don't have one I probably have one. If you need one I can have mine tested.

The four speed manual could make the car a little faster.

There really is a difference you can feel. I have driven both, up hills, where that really shows...

Would that contemplating that conversion be off the table?

My favorite machinist just bolts it onto his crank grinder.
