a/c question- previous owner is an idiot!

On my 81 300d the previous owner had the a/c compressor removed when it quit because he claimed it lightened the car up, obviously a rocket scientist. Now I am putting a/c back on the car as I fix other things.
Anyway when whoever removed it, they cut the large a/c hose that runs through the firewall sort of in front of the passenger left knee and left aprox 6 inches of hose in the engine compartment.
My question is should I just splice the hose or am I much better off going in the dash and replacing the hose in one piece.
I have an 82 300d that I am getting the a/c parts off and I can cut, rip or otherwise destory the dash of the parts car to get the hose but is it worth the trouble? I have not been in the dash of a 123 so I do not know how much trouble it will be.
Any ideas or suggestions?

If anyone needs a 82 300d turbo engine and auto tranny for junk prices, this one will be available for a month or so and then it is going to the junk yard

I would replace the hose. Leaks + AC == PITA. Removing dash is pretty straight forward. I highly recommend a 3/8" adapter for a cordless drill. Speeds things up a great deal. The only thing that you have to be careful with is the vents, I have yet to remove a dash with breaking a few.

I've have seen the low pressure (suction) hose repaired by inserting a short piece of alum pipe into the hose and worm gear clamps on weither side of it. It works fine, no leaks (I can verify that) and you could go cut the missing piece out of a junker probably for nothing or very little $$ but if its the high pressure side forget it, you'll need to replace that one.
removing the dash after removing the console is not bad, think of it as recreational training in case you ever have to do the real thing on your car!
remove the steering wheel first.

If I was going to spend the time to R&R the dash, I certainly wouldn't install 25 year old used hoses.

old hose

Even if I don't use the old hose having the parts car to dissect might keep me from screwing up the keeper.
I was also wondering if there is any reason to keep the climate control unit that is in the dash or upper center console, is this an item that gives trouble?

yes, keep the CCU, odds are good that both of them are bad though...

not to change the subject, but i see you have a deutz tractor! let me guess a f3l 912? maybie a fl4 912. Im a deutz engine mechanic, i repair farm equipment all day long. deutz did all of this stuff right, made it real easy to rebuild the engines and they run forever.

Sorry, I had not checked back on this thread.

Hose- If you take the passenger side under dash cover off, the end of the hose is very easy to get to and pull out through the firewall. It is easy enough that I am putting in the old hose since I don't think it will take me 30 minutes to replace if it goes bad any time soon.

Deutz tractor - I have a D4005 with the f3l 812 engine. This was my grandfathers tractor that he bought new when they first tried to sell them here and I have had trouble finding parts since they claim that this tractor was never available in the states.
This one also had the exhaust turning up through the hood but when I went to replace the manifold, I was told that the only exhaust mani. that came on this tractor turned down.
I found a rear end and changed it out a few years ago but still have a good roar at higher speeds.
Still the old tractor will out work any other tractor close to the same size on less fuel and is fairly fun to work on.
