Maybe I need a smoking jacket?
Well I am pretty new here, but after much searching I am quite confused.
Is there a way to search for issues about smoking on heavy acceleration? When I stomp on it I get some white smoke out of the tail pipe. I am sure its smoke (No issues with car temperature and everything looks OK in the motor). I know this is common, but I am not sure what is "good" smoke? As a side note there is some joy taken in watching people back off as I stomp it.

All my white smoking was off-accelerator smoking. {didn't say "off-throttle" due to impending knit-picking which would have followed. } When I had the pedal mashed, not much smoke. High rpm's, no smoke. Let off the pedal and the traffic behind me would disappear........ Man I loved that wagon..... Good luck!

What's wrong with throttle? It's not like calling engines motors

Well after reading that thread I discovered two things:
1. Yall really know what your doing. 2. I don't think it is white smoke, I think it is gray/blue smoke and it rally is not all that much (I can still see traffic behind me, but they really don't like it) does that sound normal? It only does when I smack it hard and the turbo kicks in. I wonder if it is blow by on the turbo? I really don't even know what that is, but the mechanic who worked on the car before I bought it said there was a small amount of that happening. I am not sure this really an issue, but since I don't want to find out $3,000 later that I could have fixed it for much less money.

It's possible it could be bad turbo seals introducing oil into the intake, but that is more likely to happen when there is less pressure in the intake rather than more.
By the way, the turbo doesn't produce blowby. Blowby is gas being 'blown by' the pistons, pressurizing the crankcase.

Ah, I love being a newbie.
Just a basic question, what is "normal" smoke?

Little to none. I can see some when accelerating at night with headlights behind me, but it's not noticeable during the day. Try simple stuff first: Valve adjustment, IP timing, injector pop test.

Smoke
Mowoc:
Sometimes diesel cars that have been driven gently around town start smoking more -- my 240D does. I don't lug the engine, but I don't run it at the top of the rev range, either, so it loads up after awhile. A good run of 75 miles at 75mph does a lot to keep it running efficiently -- folks on this board call it an "Italian tuneup". Tankdriver: Diesels run unthrottled - max air all the time - the fuel pedal only controls the amount of fuel injected. So, "throttle" is incorrect terminology for a diesel, like "gas pedal". With a (gasoline) carburetor, the throttle pedal controls the amount of air flow, and the gasoline is drawn through the jets by the air flow ... there's no direct connection to the gas at all (except that bigger carbs have momentary enrichment pumps activated by the pedal). That's where that term came from. Ed |

I see the same thing you describe; I see it when accelerating at night and there are headlights behind me. So maybe this is normal afterall.

Not all diesels. Early 616's in the 240d had a throttle.

I do . 'Throttle' doesn't have to be air though. In any case, it's not wronger than 'motor' for 'engine'.

thats nothing, my old 616 engine used to make smoke that you couldnt see through and cars would have to swerve on the street to go around it. it also used about 2 quarts of oil every 5 miles or so.
