cold start problems...
this morning i went to start my car and it took me like 30 mins i had to put my battery charger on it, the glowplug indicator light does not work but i havent really had any trouble with it, also does the alda have anything to do with the way the car starts? i have my alda off and stuck permanently in the up position with the screw since the shaft broke off on me i have no other option it seems. it starts fine when its warm but when its cold it pretty much wont start, it was a miracle i got the thing started today and it was like 72 degrees outside so it sure wasnt cold out thats just sitting overnight and letting the motor cool down.

The simple way to check the GPs is just to measure the resistance across them (look for less than 1 ohm), they usually fail open (infinite resistance).
If you really want to verify their performance, try putting 12V across them and watch them heat up (carefully). They should glow very bright yellow within a couple of seconds. I have done this by using jumper cables from my battery, hold the threaded part of the GP in one cable and touch the contact with the other cable. Be very careful, they take a while to cool off. |

May I suggest the following:
1) Bench test your glow plugs like Craig said. People on this board have reported false readings using a meter. The bench test is fool proof. 2) Adjust your valves. Bad compression = cold starting problems. That should be a good start. BTW, if your relay light is not coming on, its probably because several of your glow plugs are bad. Good luck, Scott
