Oil Sensor Connector Broke Off
I am getting ready to put my "new" motor in my 79-300CD and I was trying to remove the old oil senor line. The nut part (a 12mm) twisted off leaving the rest of the connector in the oil filter housing! NOW WHAT DO I DO?
I can't connect to the one in the 79 to the motor and I don't know how to get the rest of the connector out! Please help out. Thanks, Don |
Can I use a large screw extractor (the kind for stripped screws) to get it out...or what?

You could go to a boneyard and find another housing. Do that first then try to get the old one out. Which ever it sounds like you need to pull it off the motor to get to it better.

Doesn't he have two oil filter housings already? What's wrong with switching the two? Shouldn't be too bad with the engines out. (That's if the broken one can't be removed)

Yup, It's just a few hex bolts. If I remeber correctly there is a screen sandwiched in there too.

On mine I disconnected the oil pressure line at the gauge cluster, pulled the line through the firewall and tucked it behind the injector lines. I left it connected to the oil filter housing, and it was no problem.
It would be wise to replace the gasket in between the block and the oil filter housing when you have the engine out. :idea3: At the very least tighten the allen bolts. |
I don`t know if the 79 is like the 85 filter housing, but on the 85 there is a small plate that the turbo oil supply line and the oil gauge line connect to.
I know the 79 doesn`t have the turbo line. It would be easier to swap plates than the whole housing, unless the housing gasket is leaking. I think there are 5 bolts that hold it on, and a gasket. Charlie |
The 617 950 turbo motor I am putting in does have that plate for the turbo tube where the sensor attaches. I will take that off and try to get the old sensor out that way. I worry about the gasket. I don't have the time to order another one...maybe I could cut another one from some gasket material.

i had this problem with my SD recently. if it broke it broke ou have to order a new hose. I cut my old hose as close to the broken nut as possiblem then switched the fitting over from the new hose. a little heat helps with this process. on the broken nut i drilled it then used an easy out.
the part in there is two pieces, ine dome shaped and a threaded part that pushes against it. there is no way around ordering a new one that i found. the sealership got one in a few days. one option if you can't wait and you KNOW the oil pressure in the new engine is good plug it till you can get the part (but get the broken piece out first). I made a new gasket out of the cardboardish stuff from the Mcparts store. so that will work. there was no said screen in mine. i think my plate was 5 bolts either 8 or 10 mm. hope this helps. i'll keep an eye if you have another qustion |
Stop by leith MB on capital blvd and order the gasket, I think it was 3-4 bucks. They will get it in a day or so. I just got one there a couple of weeks ago, but they want you to pay first, then come back when it is in. Call them as they do have some longer hours I think.

Oil filter housing to block is a notorious oil leaker. I'd get the new gasket from the dealer rather than make one.

Thinking about it you may be able to coax the broken piece out by tapping it in the correct direction with a small chiesel or screwdriver and a small hammer.

When I replace the sensor/turbo oil tube mount, what kind of gasket sealant is best? It is obvious that a gasket sealant of some kind was used...a rust colored type. I hope this works, as I need to have this motor back in by Thursday at the latest! Thanks, Don |
