Hole in IP?!

I don't know how this happened, but I got home from work the other day and there was a spot of motor oil under the car. After crawling under the car, I found that an approximately 1/4 inch hole had been blown out from the bottom of the IP, under the area where the sight hole is for the IP timing. The car has been running like crap ever since, it's never been this loud or smokey. What the heck happened and is it fixable?? The car is an 87 300D.

I'll take a wild guess and say its time for a new ip. It is dumping oil still? Perhaps jbweld might take a swing at it?

If you still have the plastic panels underneath, have you found anything on it beneath the IP?

The plastic panels are long gone. I did JB weld a piece of metal to stop the leak, but there is a knocking noise that wasn't there before, so I am wondering if there is something that is trying to push down through the hole?
