Euro Engine, OEL canister

I have two questions here. On the engine in my car (1986 300D non-turbo) there is a pump on the on the end of the cam. One of the tubes from this pump runs to a small reservoir that says OEL on the lid. I am assuming that that is oil in german, but what is the purpose of this pump and reservoir?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Kurt Kiefer

Sounds like a suspension leveling system.

Hey suspension leveling system, that sounds like a winner, especially after i looked at where some of the lines went. Is there any maintenance associated with this system, fluid, filter?

yes... only use a mercedes approved hydraulic fluid..

diagnosing the system

sit on the tail gate with car off and note the sagging.. have someone else start the car... the rear end should life up to the proper ride height.. if it does then it is fine..

if it doesn't then something is not working right.. note any leaks as well as the fluid level in the reservoir for the SLS system

When the car is off it does seem to lean towards the drivers side. Don't have it running quite yet, so I dont know if it does it while it is running yet, but is there an adjustment for the side to side bias?

there is an adjustment for up and down right height...

I never have messed with the SLS system but from what I have read the leaning to the left seems odd.. maybe a failing accumulator

I thought the SLS on the 124 was piggybacked to the powersteering pump... not so?
