steel transmission line leaks
the steel transmission cooler line on my 1984 190D finally gave out. I did a search and found similar failures. I guess the rubber bushing that supports the metal line is long gone.
For those who did the fuel hose & clamp method...how has it held up? My first MB had that fix on it when I bought it. After a year I had a trans blow-out but it was the OEM flexible hose, not the "patch". I read about doing a compression fitting connector to patch the metal line back together....sounds pretty solid. Any long term reports on this method? What size compression fitting? I assume the MB line is metric and comprssion fitting are going to be SAE, but hopefully close enough...

OK, no takers....
so I remove the lines and one is worn thru pretty bad. The metal was thin in one spot and starting to crack. The local MB dealer can get them in about a week for around $50ish each. Not wanting to wait anymore I patched up the hairline crack with JB weld. Made new bushings from fuel hose and put it back together. We will see how long she holds up but I've had good results with JB.

Installed a number of transmission coolers with hose to metal lines clamped down. Never had a failure.

I've got a leak now, and had one once before. I don't have a bushing between the line and the metal bracket thing on the oil pan, which I'm sure is why I've had a hole in it twice. I'm planning to patch it as well, but I'm not sure if it could ever be clean enough for the epoxy to stick unless one takes the line off to give it a scrub.

I cut the section out and put in the fuel line with double clamps
its held up pretty well for about 10k now.. I just cleaned up the ends.... slipped on the new line and clamped it good... |

I had one leak a couple of years ago, it took about a week to get a new line from the dealer. I cut out the cracked section and used a piece of hose as a patch for about a week with no problem until I got the correct part. I also replaced all the bushings on the clamps. The patch was "good enough" for a week, but it was a hack and I wouldn't want to leave it long term. The line was pretty cheap, maybe $50-100 as I recall.
