Euro vs US turbodiesel w123

When I was in Manila a friend of mine with an '82 300TD-T Euro (with ABS and headlamp washers no less) came by and had a nice chat about w123's, diesels and MB's. I noticed that obviously it didn't have an EGR, and that the breather hose actually was routed to the bottom of the air cleaner instead of above it, and there's another branch of that line going to the U tube before the turbo. That's why the U tube of the turbo inlet pipe has a small hole with a dimple in the middle, it's for that purpose.

Now I was wondering what other differences were there? It looked like the rest seemed similar but I didn't get a good look at the IP! The car had ABS so the brake lines were all plumbed differently also.

My question is do you think the intake and exhaust manifold of those engines could be transplanted into the US versions just like in ours? And if so would it be a direct bolt on set up or would modifications have to be made? I don't know if there were any threads about this yet but it was the first time I saw a Euro turbodiesel 617 engine upclose and personal so I figured I'd throw it out there, maybe somebody would know. I know of the blocking plate too, and that's one of the future projects I might do on mine (blocking plate or Euro manifolds).

So essentially what are the differences between these engines? Thanks and I hope it's not a duplicate thread...

The pump is different. No EGR as you noted. I am doubtful of the correctness of feeding the vent tube back into the turbo, it would make for more smoke. I would like to see pics if anyone has them.

The vent line going back to the turbo made sense because instead of going to the air cleaner for an oil separator the air just goes straight to the turbo to be burned. Then there's another line I guess for the oil drain tube below the air cleaner.

the basic engine should be the same so you should be able to bolt it on a us spec engine.

My US-spec 2.5T is just like that from the factory. The vent line runs directly into the rubber flex pipe feeding the turbo inlet. All blowby gasses are burned. My engine has close to no blowby so it doesn't smoke past the normal diesel haze.

The same manifolds are used on the 78, 79 and early 80 300SD so there is no need to hunt for them in Europe. I use a set on my engine.

Interesting points, thanks all. Any other differences? Are the crankshafts/camshafts different or the entire engine is identical from this point?

Pretty much identical to the US 300TD's except for the available body options and lack of engine choking emissions devices.

So they were basically similar to our "federal" versions without the emissions stuff like the trap ox, EGR, what else?

So the M pump was only for the normally aspirated diesels in Europe, and the MW pump was for the turbodiesels?

This one is a bit charred from a fire but you can see it's basically the same as the US MW-pump.

There was also a different pump on the 617NA's in the vans.
