OM617 variations question

Greetings.

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I've got a 78 300CD with an OM617.912. It has a gouged #3 cylinder. I'm trying to get it road worthy to get it back home and I'm looking for a quick swap. I've found a 79 300D donor that I went and looked at today, and I thought the motors would be the same except that the 300D seems to have the oil filter housing in a different place. Can I just swap a few parts off the old motor and make this work, or are there other issues in this swap that are not apparent? Thanks

Bill

as long as its a 5 cylinder the parts will swap. the oil filters were put into diffrent locations, it will still work if you swap your old one out. why not just replace the liner of that cylinder?

Replacing the cylinder liner . . . . that leads to a whole mess of other questions that I have, but will eventually get to. I'm going to rebuild the original motor as well but have been reading things like "only completely remanufacturing the motor is the "RIGHT" way to do it, no just boring it out, etc, etc". Are they wet or dry sleeves? It really is a time and money crunch. I lose my workspace in 6 weeks and have very little money to get it running with.

Not easily

I think it is much easier to swap that engine in and change the external parts that need changing. Installing a new liner, (even if that is all it needs at this point) can't really be done except in the context of a complete overhaul or rebuild. The liner has to be machined and I don't think that can be done without a total tear down of that block.

The dealer will have the correct oil filter housing gasket.
You might want to also swap the alternator and other accessories. If you have working AC in the car, remove the compressor from the old engine and swing it out of the way while you are installing the new one. If you do not open the lines, you will be OK.

well you could punch out the old liner and put in a diffrent liner and pistion from a junkyard motor that are good, then put the head and pan back on, your good to go.

78's and 79's should have the oil filter in the same location, left rear of engine. Pre-77 300d's have the oil filter in a different location. Either one of those engines has been previously switched out or you've been given the wrong years. (I think)

Easier said than done. I've looked into this idea myself and from what I've read here and been told that it's not really possible,

The donor car in question is definately a 79, is there a guide somewhere that shows engine stamp locations and the like that I could use to identify the motor in it? Thanks.

Can you describe the different locations of the oil filters?
I'm aware of three differences. The 115 300d's had a different location (front right?). 123's had it left rear facing upward on the cars. Vans have the filter facing down and back, accessible from underneath.

My 78 300CD has an upright cannister in the left rear of the motor. the 79 300D in question has one under the left front of the motor, pretty much in front of and below the FIP.

why is that? i dont think they are pressed in there, and your not going to be salvaging the old liner anyways.

Unless there was some oddity that I'm unaware of, it sounds to me like someone has put an engine in the 79 from a 115 chassis....123's that I know of all had the upright filter.

They are dry type liners, I do believe they are press in fit too, kinda have to be to get good heat transfer to the block in a dry situation.
