240D ip timing question

I am trying to get a 240D started. I bought it for the rebuilt engine and ip. IP was already installed when I bought it. The car had never been started since the installation. I am checking the timing. If I set it at 24 btc and pump the handpump, I get NOTHING. If I set it at TDC, I get a steady flow as long as I pump. I am using a homemade drip tube made from another injector line. I followed the Haynes book directions of removing the vane and spring from the ip before I installed the drip tube. I have been reluctant to pull the ip and check the timing without checking with ya'll first. Now don't laugh but if I am turning the engine clockwise with my a wrench, the numbers to the right of the 0 degree mark are btdc, correct?

Does this sound like the ip was not correctly installed?

Thanks!

You may be 180 degrees off, but there is no harm in trying to start it anyways.

Somewhere between 24BTDC and TDC is the point where the steady flow will quickly stop and become a drip. That's the current setpoint for the IP timing. It might be 22 BTDC or it might be 2 BTDC or anywhere in between.

But, we definitely know that it's late.

So, I'd set the engine to 24 BTDC, loosen the IP, and rotate it toward the engine until you get the flow to just turn into a drip. Then it's set.

If the IP hits the engine before this can occur, then you'll need to pull the IP and advance the shaft by one spline.......but, hopefully, this won't occur.

I already tried adjusting the ip when it was set at 24 btdc and I never got any flow. I tried moving it as far as it would go towards and away from the engine. No flow.

I suppose I need to pull the ip and check the timing. Right?

Set the engine to 18 BTDC and move the IP all the way away from the engine and see if you can get flow. If so, then rotate it slowly toward the engine until the flow stops and becomes a drip.

You're now set at 18 BTDC if this is successful.

I set it at 18 btdc and had to push the ip all the up next to the engine, but I got a good drip rate. Should that be OK?

By the way, THANKS for the feedback.

Yep, that's what I figured. You're 6 degrees retarded from spec and you cannot get more advance unless you remove and reset the IP by one spline. It'll affect fuel economy and power a bit but won't prevent a start.
