Anyone ever replaced a manual sunroof? Compatibility?

So I have a 1982 300TD with a manual sunroof. It leaks water like crazy through my head panel when it rains and i've blow out all the lines- they are no longer clogged. I took the big plunge the other day and took down my headpanel and started removing the ceiling interior. I've discovered the the drain plugs are rusted out where they attach - the passenger side one isn't even connected! therefore its no wonder the water goes straight into my car. The good news however, if i can really call it that, is that the rust seems to be primarily on the actual sunroof frame- not the frame of my car. So I'm thinking I could replace the rail frame system- basically the whole sunroof system that attatches to the body and save my car from rusting out. We have a 300D parts car which has been for the most part pretty compatible with the wagon, but I wondered if anyone knows whether the sunroof is. I'm going to go look at it tomorrow and try to call mercedes. Also if anyone has ever done this and has advice or warnings. If its seems impossible or if people advise against this, I'm going to have to seal up my sunroof permanently- but i'd really hate to do that. Any help would be great!! Thanks! -Sarah

The entire sunroof frame will work on any W123.

If you already have the headliner off, you might as well swap the entire thing to save on parts swapping.

Once the headliner is out of the way, dropping the frame is easy. Getting the assembly out of the wagon is also easy thanks to the big 'ol door in the back, but the sedan requires a bit of effort to squirm it out.

Yes, all it takes is 2 or 4 bolts and the top panel will slide out of the tracks.

All I need is the little back tabs that push the panel flush with the roof.

If somebody has a pair of those tabs to sell, PM me.

If I understand correctly, you are replacing your manual SR frame w/one from a 300D, which is an electric SR, to use w/your manual SR. In this case, yes, you will need the two side lifting tabs you mentioned. These aren't sold separately as they are spot welded to the frame. I suggest you cut the tabs from your manual frame and re-spot them to the 300D frame. You will also need to use the 2 plastic stops on each side that guide the stopping arms. These too can be used from your manual frame.

If you take it out

Could you see if you have white nylon "sliders" with "ears" somewhere.
If you do, could you post a pic of where they go? I found one in the right
track of my sunroof on a 123. The sunroof works fine, but I'd like to make it correct, thanks

Nosparkneeded, it sounds like the nylon slide has come off the right, rear foot. They are cheap, even at the dealer. I would replace it right away and since the panel has to be removed to do so, replace all 4.

there is a write up in the DIY section by Bruce Kennedy on swaping to
manual from electric. some of that might be helpful as there are pictures.

most all the parts are still available from MB. the arm with the little black wheel is $86.00 per side don`t want to buy many of them.

Although I cannot say for sure, I've always been under the impression that the wagon sunroof is different from the sedan/coupe. different contour to the panel.

That is correct, I am currently trying to install a w126 into my 84 wagon and there are definitely differences. the back arms that bolt up to the ceiling are not in the correct place on the w126 (not sure about the w123 frame) as well the wagon appears to have a brace that the w126 frame does not account for. I am in the process of re-removing it and making the proper adjustments to the w126 one so that it will fit, its two extra things beyond the power to manual conversion.

Did you use a w123 frame??
