Got me a 240D
I just bought myself a 1974 240D its in great shape the whole car looks used, but not trashed. It will clean up nicely with a little time. The only problem with the car is it has some major blow-by. I don't know whet history of the car. So I don't know what caused the blow-by. I’m going to adjust the valves and change the oil (run some 40 weight or something thick) to see if I can get the blow-by to go away. I had a Toyota once that was in storage have horrible blow-by and just running some heavier oil for a while loosed up the rings I’m hopping (my fingers are crossed) that the 240 is having a similar problem. But if not it's time for a new engine I suppose. I know a read on here a while back about an OM617.951 being put into an old 240. I’d love to find that link again.
I’ll post pics of the car tomorrow.

Just be sure the oil is diesel rated.

Diesel engine rings stuck? lol, i doubt they will come unstuck with anything less than synthetic in the pan. They are good cars, the 616 engines are bullet proof (i had a 240d that would use two quarts every ten miles.) the cylinders were worn Two millimieters, like ten thousants. the car was hell to start in the morning, and Poured smoke out the exhaust (you stomp on it anywhere even on the highway and it smoked) but that thing still ran, and when you got it up into the higher rpm's it ran pretty good.

yeah that dang thing is strong. just as strong as my SD. its slow. but you would never know it had blow-by from driving it. i got it up to 87 on the freeway. took 4 miles but it got there. is there a synthetic oil you think would be best?

Don't be so fixated on the blowby. They virtually ALL have blowby. My 240 has a ton and it still drives great. As long as your oil consumption isn't ridiculous your car will be fine for a long, long time.

the guy i bought it from said that once you start it and drive it and it gets hot, if you turn it off it will not start again until it is cold. he said it was because of the blow-by. what do you guys think? is there another reason for this problem?

I'd say adjust the valves and see what happens. If they are all tight it would explain this too and is much more likely than anything serious. Did he happen to say when the last time the valves had been adjusted was (if ever)?

he bought the car from a guy in chico for 1000 and cleaned it up and tried to sell it for 1500. he sold it but then the guy returned it because of the engine problem. so i bought it for 600. knowing that there was an engine issue. so i know nothing about the car... it is a very solid car. other then the engine issue.
