240d 3.0

For those of you who may be interested, I just finished converting a w123 240d to a 240d 3.0. The m617 used was a Euro-spec motor originally set up for manual transmission (617.912.10.xxxxxx) and the chassis was a manual trans car thus making it a simple conversion. The original 240d motor threw what seems to be a wrist pin of all things after 289k miles (will know more once I tear it down). The project took three days from start to finish and came out seemlessly. This is the second of these that I have done and I love the end result. Here are photos of the conversion.

Did you have to modify the OM617 to install the center mount?

I would like to know too. When I put a turbo 617 in a 240D the oil pan was much farther back and hit the center mount.

t-strap

Installing the t-strap was direct plug and play. The m617 had the mounting holes in the oil pan. On the Euro m617, instead of the t-strap, a bracket for engine shocks is installed. However, the 240d does not have the frame mounts for the engine shocks in the correct position and to utilize engine shocks, one would have to weld the proper brackets on the frame. In light of this I decided to retrofit the t-strap as means of experiment. I am very pleased with the result. My first conversion did not utilize the t-strap and vibration was noticeably stronger in the cabin.

WRT the 617 turbo, I am surprised that there were clearance issues. It strikes me that something is not right, be it mounts or the engine arms as there were no difference to center cross-member position on any of the w123s to the best of my knowledge. Was the 617 used from a different chassis (w116 or w126)?

When we did my 83 240/300d euro we eleminated the t strap and fabbed a shock mount on the fender from angle iron.

Works fine.

Geesh, the color of the coolant coming out of the heater core was scary!

Up to where i know the motor mounts from a 115, 116, 126 and 123 are not interchangeable. Yu r gonna need the mounts from a w123 OM617 if you transplant a 617 from a 115, 116 or 126.

Now I am surprised to learn than the lower oil pans are not the same in all versions of the OM617.:(
I bought a w116 for a song just to transplant the engine in a 123.123 (wwith manual AC!!!) dont tell me that the oil pan is not gonna fit.....:(

^^^ If it doesn't you can surely find a lower pan for cheap. I bought a new one off fleaBay for less than $50.

W123 OM616 mounts will work as well for the OM617. I have but one engine shock and no center mount with no excess vibration that I can tell.

It should fit a W123. My engine is from a W116. I believe the W116 engine will not fit in the W126.

I believe it's the W123/126 engine that will not fit the W116 without changing the lower oil pan.
