Are you sure you need pistons? about 75% of the time we have not had to buy pistons for them.

Also I have a good set of four for a 240d if you need them...used.

No I am not sure, I don't have the engine apart yet. I am just trying to get my ducks in a row in cases I need them. I am trying to sell or part the car. If I can't do that I will either have to be happy with scrap price or decide I want to enter into a money pit.

You seem to be saying to have done a lot of these. Are you a MB mechanic or just a private restorer. I know from my extensive gas engine experience that many pistons are scuffed. Also, I am concerned about ring groove wear. Is it your experience that these are not usually issues with these engines. I was hoping, if I coudn't sell it and ended up rebulding the engine, that I could get away with new sleeves and the old pistons. Is that usually the course you take?

I am not a professional, but I have the use of an excellent professional machinist, who is also about my best friend. We have done five or six benzes together, mostly with his work, and usually we have reused the pistons. He measures the wear on the ring lands and so forth and makes a determination of condition. When I had pistons that were too worn we went through all the spares I had and found good enough used ones to reuse.

Usually we have done the sleeves and rebored them to match the diameter of the used pistons for factory new clearances.
