gas or diesel transmission pics provided

so is this a gas or diesel transmission? this was an extra trans that came with the car. the car came with a bad trans in it and i want to be sure this extra trans will work before i swap. also does anyone know what is supposed to thread into the hole in the first pic? the trans on the car now is wide open just like this one.

any help would be appreciated. i really want to get this thing on the road by this weekend.

Can't tell from the data provided. Give us all the numbers stamped into the casting JUST above the oil pan on the passenger's side.

I would guess the hole is for the speedo cable. Or maybe a bowden cable if that model of trans has one.

Yes, 722.118 is a diesel transmission. IIRC, it is a 240D or non-turbo 300D tranny- 4 bolt.

That hole- not sure. The speedo cable should be on the left. The bowden cable or the lever would be more in the middle of that side. I am thinking it may be the return line from the radiator (?) Don't you have one of these to match up? What is your car? It would be helpful to add your car to your sig so we know.

the car is in the garage. this is what i observed when i was under it yesterday. the same hole is open on that side (passenger). there is 4 hoses with banjo fittings going to the transmission. there is a connector going to a module with a few wires (driver side). the same module seems to be connected to the shifter. is the bowden cable the one connected to the throttle linkage?

I think thats for the modulator (red), i just looked at a 722.118 that i have in my
garage, but not all 722.118 used modulators, the one installed in my car has the linkage system.

Yes, the bowden cable is connected to the throttle linkage. It may also be a bellcrank, rather than a cable, also connected to the throttle. Or nothing at all......

Yes, could be modulator as well- that may be the most likely. I think it is back in that area on a 4-bolt.

so that would explain the vac line hanging above it?

**edit**
if the modulator controls shifts then what the bowden cable control?

The bowden cable determines how long to hold each gear....so if you're gently accelerating, it will know by the throttle position and shift sooner....and if you're flooring it, it will hold the gears out to the max rpm's before shifting....etc

Yes. Just go through the "buy parts" link at the top of the page, enter in your car...year...etc...and you can search for it or look through the categories.

my brother's 280e has a 240 tranny in it. I put it in while I owned the 280. It works fine but has shift points at the lower rpm normal for a diesel. I suspect the only difference is the shift rpm determining device.
