87 TDT Cruise Control Actuator Won't Stop Making Noise

On my 87 TDT the cruise control has never worked properly, not a big deal, i just plan to fix it, never do and don't worry about it. yesterday i was poking around in the engine bay with the key in "run" position, engine not running. i noticed a small clockwork type of sound and traced it to what i believe is the cruise control actuator. i pulled each and every fuse in the panel and still the clockwork sound. disconnected the battery and the whirring stopped. re-connected battery and whirring began again, but then seemed to start and stop intermittently with no rhyme or reason why. i turned off the car and went to bed.

any idea what has caused this behavior and what to do to fix it? is it normal for this thing to whir continuously with the engine not running but key in "run"?

on the same topic, how do you remove the amplifier? i have looked for it from descriptions found in searches here, but never been able to find it under the dash. where exactly is it located in my car?

thanks,

Scott, I have the same problem with my 86 300 SDL. A loud ticking noise.

Did you find what was causing yours?

Thanks
Harry

no, but it stopped making the noise. it wasn't loud and i woudn't call it a click. more like a clockwork spining inside.

My 85 300d does the same thing--seems to whir all the time. It can't be normal, but my CC doesn't work so I never really worried about it. Like you, I've planned to fix it but never have gotten around to it. Mine works intermittently. Strange thing is, it seems to "work" on one stretch of road that I travel fairly often. Most other times, it'll just put my go pedal to the floor. I've tried to let her go to see at what speed she might feel is appropriate, but well, let's just say she wasn't yet comfortable propelling me to 92 mph.
