window seal replacement?

both front and back window seals need replacement on my 81 300d.
i was thinking of buying seals online and doing job myself. any advice?
easy job? or no.....

I did the window seals on my '93 300D and it was pretty easy. You kinda of mess the seals up getting them off, but who cares if your replacing them. The new ones go in very easy but you want to be sure you have them lined up correctly, because you don't want to have to pull them up after getting them started. They have a metal band inside and once bent wont lay flat again.

I had Phil order them for me at FasLane (The MercedesShop Parts Store) and had them in a few days. Had both front door seals replaced in just 15 minutes.

I would say, yes it is easy. But I have done about 10 of these. Most guys want to find a pro to do them. Problem is if anyone else does it, you are SOL if they break your old glass.

If you break your own glass your not SOL?

Yes, you are SOL too. The difference is they have a (possible) incentive to break your glass.

If your gonna to replace the seal, you can cut the old one from inside with a utility knive remove the entire assembly (glass + trim+ rest of the seal) clean them out well.
Install the new seal, glue it with the MB sealing compound, put back the trim (this is actually the most dangerous step).

Then you do the rope thing with 1/8" rope and soapy water.

Place the assmbly o the frame and start pulling on the rope. You need somebody on the outside to push slightly on the assembly edge along the rope.

All for all it is a very easy process, but there are some details to keep in mind.
The first one would be to take it slow, use a OE seal, OE sealing compound, and very very gentle when putting back the aluninum trim back on the glass.

The whole thing takes barely 45 minutes.

Now the back glass the process is a little bit more complex because of the headliner (it is tucked under the seal, so you cannot just go with your utilility knive and start hacking the seal), and the defrost wires (again you cannot just hack there with a knive).
