Rare enough, and desirable enough, that ones in excellent to mint condition fetching five figures would not surprise.

I bought my CD 3 and a half years ago 83k miles, everything works except the out side power mirror. $10,000. I'm happy! Would really like a stick, but not in this one.

that's production date right? if that's true, my 10/81 300CD-T is one of 777. cool :)

240TD??? I've never heard of that. Was that in Europe only?

Hey John, that and about $5 bucks will still get you coffee at Starbucks.......:D
That does show definitively that some 81 CD's had a turbo..... {finally, the very annoying "-T" might have some merit in this ONE application......}

I have thought about getting one
engine in my 81 300TD is nearing end of life cycle, excessive blow by
spare 4 speed trans in 79 240D
spare 4 cyl engine in garage

my 80 240D is slow but it goes anywhere I want it to
I suspect 500k plus miles, still makes 2k mile plus trips @35 mpg

No use worrying about blow by until it won't start or just chews through the oil.
As far as your engine/tranny swap, I hope your 240 engine is from a Euro and has the hydraulic pump attached to the head, or you will have a slow wagon with no hydraulic suspension...... ;) No use having a wagon without SLS!
