Just picked up 87 300SDL... STILL HAS THE TRAP OXIDIZER!!! What should i do?

Bought it from my neighbor, who bought it new in 87. Its got 155k on it, rusted pretty bad, but it STILL has the trap!! So i called the local dealer and the recall is still in effect. So i can for sure have the trap replaced free of charge, however my question is what additional items will the dealer replace for free that stem from this item? I've heard stories anywhere from full exhaust systems & turbos to entire top end rebuilds! Is any of this true besides the bypass tube? Does anyone have the literature for the actual recall that outlines what can be replaced? The car was driven by his wife 2 miles to work and back every day. Runs like a champ, took it on a 30 min highway cruise, didn't even think about overheating (~75 out today). Romped it a little in town, still ran perfect. Just some blue smoke in the morning and rough idle for about 20 seconds at cold start. Rev it to 2k and it all smooths out.

IF i can have more than the tube replaced, what should i do? Run some metal shavings through the turbo till the head for sure is cracked? hahahha (im serious)

Did you verify it was indeed a TrapOx by the part number? At least on my vehicle the TrapOx and Catalyst replacement look EXACTLY the same.

now why would you destroy a motor to get new stuff out of MB? they're a good company that doesn't need junk done to them... if the recall covers things on your motor, that need to be replaced, trust me, the techs will do them. they like getting paid from MB. it can't hurt to point out that the turbo and head could have been damaged from the trap. but I'd not recommend sabotage. you could destroy your motor and a tech might see what has been done and deny the claim and then you'd be left with a dead car...

So what? You #14 head will most likely last a long, long time. Mine has 305k on it and still going strong. A #14 head does NOT mean guaranteed failure.

****, after reading the recall notice, it looks like at most i get a new turbo. The exhaust is left out of the 126 section. Check out page 3:

In the case of my '87 300D (W124, OM603), the dealer replaced the trap cat with a straight pipe, installed a new cat after the turbo and replaced the rest of the exhaust system back to and including the tailpipe (it was very rusty). They also found a hole in the turbo and replaced it with a new one. All done as part of the recall campaign, zero cost to me. Since the dealer gets to charge everything back to the factory, they usually have no problem replacing anything and everything south of the original trap cat.

I would think that the same policy would apply to the W126 (300SDL) but have no data to support it. As regards vwbuge's comment on trap cat vs. trap ox, that applies to the earlier (1985) W123 and W126 cars with the OM617 engine only.

Nope, that is a low-life move!! {I'm serious}

And as noted above, the head wouldn't be covered anyway.
I'd be more fixated on the rust........

you will get a new cross over pipe and they will look at your turbo to see if it was damaged by the old trap. if it was then you get a new turbo. they will also install a new exhaust pipe from the turbo that includes a catalyst. this pipe will end about half way back. the rest is yours to complete. Had this done 2 years ago.

if you are parting out the car I would like some stuff (alot of stuff if price is right )

I have an 86 SDL and am doing some custom interior stuff (my aunt gave me a $12,000

and a $1,200 singer sewing machines)

I want to do the parts then swap then in instead of taking my panels out and not have them while I get leather sewed up

where do you live?
how soon is it going to be parted out?

SDL's come in the PAP near me all the time. I paid 200 for all seats, and all door panels, and carpet with console and lots of extra stuff from several other cars... lmk if you need panels etc next time I head to the PAP.
