Off the wall question

I have a 75 Triumph TR6 that I want to put a diesel into. Alas MB diesels are too large to fit into the engine compartment. VW diesels would be great but they are front wheel drive.

1st question: Does anyone know of a 5 speed rear wheel transmission that will bolt up to a VW diesel engine?

2nd question: Anyone got any suggestions as to a 4 cylinder diesel and 5 speed rear wheel transmission setup that might fit and that I can get parts for? I have an 81 Isuzu 1.8 diesel, but can't find parts for it.

That car just made Time Magazine's list of the 50 worst cars of all time. :D ;)

I know there are people who put the 1.9 tdi into all kinds of stuff, check stuff for suzuki samurai's thats a very popular one and you may be albe to use the transmission out of it, from what I have seen it has a divorced transfercase. and Im not 100% sure but I think most VW bell housings are the same so you may be able to use 1.6 also

That would probably work in the TR6. IIRC the engine in a TR6 slants also.

Chevette Diesel

I owned a Chevette Diesel with a Izuzu diesel and a 5 spd. Ford also used this engine in small tractors. You might try there for parts.

Actually, Time put the TR7 on the list, not the TR6. Very big difference!

Perkins makes them.

Small diesels, that is. Onan and Yanmar do as well.

I got the cars mixed up. I was thinking he was talking about the one that looks like a dustbuster.

The volvo diesel of the eighties used a six cylinder vw diesel with a four speed and overdrive stick tranny. That would be a very rugged tranny. Maybe the later diesel will bolt to it too. I am sure the eighties four cylinder deisel would bolt to it too.

I don't know from experience but am conjecturing.

Really though you should keep the tr stock and get a cheap diesel to tool around in.

Isuzu diesels are used in several marine engines and generator sets. If you can find a copy of "Boats & Harbors" you will find suppliers advertising Isuzu equipment.Ask around boat yards and marinas for a copy of the "yellow sheet" as that newspaper is commonly called.

lol, were throwing away a nissan diesel, because there are no more parts available for it, allthough it runs perfectly.

Aren't any parts available through Nissan?

ForcedInduction 09-09-2007 09:42 PM

There should be plenty of forklift shops that stock parts.

Why would you want to put a diesel into your TR6 - is the engine shot? I've owned my '74 TR6 since new and have rebuilt the engine once - it was easy and the parts were reaonable. Owning two diesels and aTR6 I can't imagine so significantly downgrading my TR with a diesel - not to mention slowing it down.

JESCO in Ceres,Ca just south of Modesto, Ca handles Nissan Diesel parts,
and many other diesels as well.

They have a 240Z with the Maxima LD28 6cyl Diesel installed, looks factory. and runs good. little big for a TR6.

The SD22 in my Datsun weighs 475#, might be a little heavy.
also you need to think about the heighth of the engine, valve cover to oil pan.

too tall, add a lift kit:D.

This engine is sized about right, but adapting it to a transmission might be just a little tricky :D

Find you a 4 cyl from a Izusu I-Mark or Pup Diesel. They were shallow engines, parts are still good.

LUVMBDiesels 09-10-2007 05:29 PM

What about the 616 or the 601? Are those too big?
BMW also made a diesel for the 524TD (M21D24 engine) back in the '80s It is a six, but is only 2.4L and it has a turbo. Jeep also used the Perkins 192 I4 in the CJ5

However, I would seriously think about putting a diesel in a TR6 The car was slow enough with the gasser in it. I would look for a Cosworth 4 cyl. engine to put in her instead ;)

A swap that I've seen in the past is the aluminum block Olds 215/Rover 3.0 V-8 into the TR-6.

At the time, the limiting factor was finding a GM 4-speed to bolt up to the Olds engine or the difficulty of finding a wrecked Rover.

Yes, it is basically the same engine they put in the TR-7. Using the four-barrel Olds version, you would almost double your horsepower and lighten the front end of the car by about 200 pounds.

So far among diesel options, I like the Quantum.

Too bad this thread is so old! The Nissan diesel was used in Jeeps and Scouts so parts are available still.
