It sounds like an engine, if ever built in production, that will keep repair techs busy for countless hours.

Anyone here old enough to remember the GM 8-6-4 and what a fiasco that was?

GM is prototyping similar engines http://money.cnn.tv/2007/08/23/autos/gm_hcci/index.htm. Regarding the V 8-6-4, newer technology has made those engines a reality. Chrysler's HEMI and GM's 5.7 liter v8's are multi displacement as well as the V-6 in the Honda Odyssey.

I was talking about the first generation...back in the '80s. OK, maybe in 25 years MB can have this technology figured out too...I just wouldn't line up to buy the first of them is all.

Yeah, I worked at a Caddy Dealer when those were replaced by the HT4100 (HandTight 4100) aluminum block and cast iron heads...that was good one to warp the block when over heated, which happened frequently as the head gaskets went out...

International Harvester did this way back when with their WD-40 wheel and TD-40 crawler tractors. Started on gasoline and switched to diesel once they were warmed up.
