1987 300D oil residue in surge tank
I am working on a guys 1987 603 powered wagon. He bought it new. it has 316,000 miles on it. RUNS like a clock. I have found black, oily residue in the radiator fill tank. No water in the crancase oil. Cracked head?
Also, with this kind of miles on the engine, would it be wise just to pull the head and replace it? This is an interesting car..... He special ordered it yellow exterior and a very unusual green interior. He took the car to Egypt for a few years and had factory pans put under the whole drive train for protection from road debris.

it's best to test the coolant system for gas transmission, and have the oil analyzed for glycol before condemning the head.

Was the car worked on before, like replacing a head gasket? If so, it is possible that the prior mechanic failed to clean the oil out.

That sounds like a cool color combination. Can you post picks? Does it have EGR? Do you know if it has the original head? If it hasn't had the head gasket replaced, it could be the head or just the head gasket. Has he been running the correct type of coolant? If not, that can etch the head where the gasket has failed and make it hard for a new gasket to seal. Ask me now I know this.

I was just reading my FSM cd today.
There was an oil into coolant leak problem NOT related to a cracked head but a poorly designed head-to-gasket-to-block seal in the front. I don't want to give you the wrong work order number but it might be time for a new gasket.

Thanks guys! I want to give him the best answer to this. How LONG LIVED are the 603 engines below thw HEAD? Cylinders? Bearings?
The car has had deceint care but it has been driven. If it is ready for a complete overhaul instead of just a head R&R, let me know. 313,000 miles. I don't want to waste his money on a head R&R when the rest might be ready also. I have R&R'd a head on my E320 gasser, 104 motor. Is the 603 as easy to do? Is there a way to lock the inj pump and timing chain? Thanks
