Do I need an oil change?

It's been 5k miles since I last changed my oil, using the Mobil1 5W40 Turbodiesel oil. In those 5k miles, I've had to add 5 or 6 quarts. It's not leaking, I guess it's burning. So, it's not like I have 5k mile old oil in there, so do I really need to spend $50 on 8 quarts or can I just change the filter and assume all to be well in lube land?

Wow ... this is not good. My 83SD has gone about 3,000 miles since the last change on 15W40 Amsoil 100% synthetic with no topping up required.

Something is not right here. Do you see a lot of blue smoke in the exhaust? How many miles has your car got?

You'll probably get all kinds of different responses....if it was me, and with that oil, I'd let it and the filter go another 2500 miles with your replenishment/usage.

The acid test would be to send a sample off and have it tested.

Doesn't smoke much at all. And the ALDA is removed. I don't push her too hard from a stop, which is when I would see the most smoke from the missing ALDA. I know it's not good. I think it's being sucked into the turbo.

I would change the filter and switch to MUCH cheaper oil until I found the fix to keep the consumption down.
Rotella 5W40 syn is like 10.00 per 4quart bottle... maybe go to some dino rotela or mobil 1300... check your vacuum pump for consumption, look over your air filter and see if it's totally covered with oil. you may need to rebuild your oil catch can in there.
good luck.

The air filter is definitely covered with oil. Any links for oil catch can rebuild?

Does it have much blowby? That could be where a lot of the oil is going. Every 5-6k when I do my 5w40 synthetic changes I usually need maybe 1-1.5qts of makup oil in that time period, and our '83 (with no blowby at all) needs maybe .5qt

Last time I did the oil cap check for blowby there was little to no movement.

Something just does not add up here...That's way too much consumption for no leaks and no smoke...

When do you check the oil level? It should be done either on a cold engine or 5-10 min after engine shutdown.

If I had consumption like that, I'd only change the filter every 4k miles.

You're wasting your money with that kind of oil consumption.

If it already burns 6 quarts of oil with synthetic you don't need to "preserve" the engine with synthetic, it's too late for that.

Yeah I'd be runnin' Rotella 15w40 dinosaur oil...nice and cheap.....and with consumption like that, a 55gallon drum starts to make sense!

I agree, abandon synthetic on that engine. Straight 40wt diesel rated oil would be even better.

If the engine is burning that much I'd use regular dino 15w40. M1 is to expensive to keep topping up like that! 5k miles is up their on a 617, they really soot up the oil.

I'm at 3,000 miles on Delvac 1 5w40 in my 603, the level remains unchaged. I wonder if the level will move at all when I change the oil at 5k miles.

That's a lot of oil -- sure your vacuum pump isn't sucking it out?
