New trans for a 97 E300?

I am faintly considering a 1997 E300 for sale in need of a transmission replacement. Is this really a $3-4k job?

How much of a pain is it to do myself? Thanks for any advice.

If it needs a new trans, you're looking at approx. $5k. Save a grand or so elsewhere, but for a tranny I'd stick to OEM MB.... Just my $0.02

Even if you find a place online that will sell a 722.600 tranny to ya, consider the core and shipping costs...
