Saving a car from the boneyard and puttin it back on the road.... I like that!!

Basically, it sounds like a grey-market small block 123 diesel which probably gets an easy 35 mpg.... cant imagine why parts should be tough to get, but see if you can find out the engine number - 615 or 616?

well i dont know a whole lot about it. if someone that knows how to post pics would maybe give me their email and post them for me. its a small engine. the interior isnt as bad as some of the stuff ive seen and it has hardly any body damage. i saw it about a year ago and when i went to get the ball joints pressed in the spindle i brought my camera so i could take pics.

Never heard of a 200. Didn't MB go from a 190 to a 220 diesel?

I've seen at least one 200 on the road in Washington DC...

Except for the trunk script and the euro bumpers, seemed like any other W123. Think I have an English MB brochure from 1981 that shows the 200 as the "entry" model 123 sedan.

Maybe post on the Vintage forum?

Kay,

MB did make a 200D, I have one. It was essentially a 190D but the engine had 5 main bearings instead of 3 in the 190D engine. It came out about 1967 and was the last of the fin cars. The first 220D was non fins and was first available in 1968 at least in the USA.

Is the one you are looking at a fin car?

It wouldn't have fins if it's a 79 model. There was indeed a W123 200D but it was never imported to the US. If I saw one at a junkyard with a decent body and an engine in one piece I'd probably want to buy it too.

The last year for 110 chassis 200D was 68. I can't remember when they changed from 190D to 200D, but I think it was probably 67. Basically if it has front disk brakes, it's a 68. That one looks seriously rusty. It would probably cost serious $$$ to save the chassis. Also, the engine blocks had some bad metal in 68. If it's a 68 with the original engine, it's almost guaranteed to be bad.

So its not some kind of an oddball small block 123??

Then MB went from the 190 to the 200 in 1965..... instant improvements included minor stuff like door pockets, bits of chrome, flow through ventilation and larger signal light clusters front and back Dual circuit, power assisted front disc brakes first appeared on 110's with the 190 in August 1963. An MB option exclusive to Heckflosse 190's was an amazing reclining bench seat option that tilted all the way down into a double sized bed.

From experience, the only rust that's really fatal on finbody cars occurs behind the headlight brows. That old 200D looks pretty good to me, but bosch reportedy had problems with early injector pump bearings which is something to look out for. And MB used several different clutches on 110's which do not have transferable parts where pressure plates, throwout bearings and discs are NOT interchangable and must not be mismatched.

Sorry for being so long winded, I can talk for hours about Heckflosse/Finbody cars.
