Weird drivetrain problem

When I put my car into neutral or park, the driveshaft is rocking back and forth under the car like its still partially in gear - anyone ever had this problem before? I'm taking it to the shop on Monday, but I don't want to buy another transmission if I can avoid it.

I drive an 83' 300D with 200,000 miles. The tranny flares badly on the 2-3 shift when cold, doesn't exhibit any flare when warm.

Any insight would be appreciated...:confused:

Completely normal. If by what you mean is when you rev the engine in neutral or park the shaft moves (or clunks) a bit...thats normal. The pressure in the transmission when the engine is rev'd make it do that. Ours do it too.

Actually, the engine is idling when this happens.

Huh....I haven't noticed it when idling, but I suppose it still could happen. Its not something to worry about as long as its still shifting and functioning properly....
