I can't believe it's that important. I mean... pollution is pollution but I can't believe that California is actually paying somebody to sit by a phone and answer it, and paying some other office to drag these people in and check their cars out... over a cloud of smoke.

That's just sort of on the fine line between "responsible" and "utterly, unimaginably, ridiculous"

Come on, we are talking about a state with a fetish on stupidly low NOx emissions while the rest of the world is concentrating on CO2.

How many people really understand how costly it is to go from an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle with 0.05g/mile of NOx to Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle at 0.02g/mile?

I've been driving diesels on and off for the last 25 years. While living in Kali it was my way to give the emission testing Nazi's the big middle finger since diesels were exempt from testing.

Their fetishes on studipity transcends way more than NOx, Co2, or excessive smoke. I count myself real lucky, I must live in one of the last "emission free" counties left in Texas or the Continental US.

As to the biannual smog tests, they still are exempt. (For now. It could take a tun for the worse; I would not be surprised.)

I don't know whether they must get tested for smog upon first registration or change of ownership.

The new diesels models can't be sold in California and about 6 other eastern states - yet. You would have to buy one out of state that was used with over 7,500 miles on it. Some people did, but the E320cdi is a sought after used car; no bargains on them.

Business is great.
Plus, we haven't had to do a smog test for 3-4 years, ever since we got rid of our last gasser. The state couldn't give a crap that my TDI only met EPA emissions specs, not CA.

Isn't it outrageous that the state doesn't let new, CLEAN diesels be sold here, but it couldn't give a damn less about the pollution produced by old diesels??
If they want to reduce pollution, they should be giving REBATES to trade up to a new diesel! Forget bickering about NOx emissions, ANY new diesel is going to pollute less than my E300 or your 300SD.

I'm all for reducing emissions, but for as long as we spell it Kalifornistan, I'll be blowing diesel smoke out the back of my E300.

No rebates but many air quality districts will gladly give you some money to retire your diesel. For example, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District will give you $650 to retire your running and registered 1985 and older car. Guess where they are going? Right, the boneyards like Pick-N-Pull where you can get parts for cheap and keep other diesels running. I can't imagine anybody would "retire" a running California (rust free)diesel for $650!

You're absolutely right. In theory, giving rebates to trade up to a cleaner diesel would be a great benefit for the air. But there will always be the factor of people like us, people who don't want to get rid of their old car, or who could get much more money by selling it to someone who could care for it.

Thats not such a bad deal. If you have some POS junker they will give you $650 for it?

Kalifornia is great entertainment for us; I like to call them our communist neighbors to the west.
