Great looking car, love that color. I personally don`t think you over paid for it. If you had to bring one up to the condition yours looks, it could cost you quite a bit.
check the oil cooler lines where they connect to the oil cooler.that end of them is rubber, and if they are the originals should be replaced. some say if they aren`t leaking they are ok. but if they are wet at the crimp, change them. feel the rubber, if it is hard, it`s time.

There is a great amount of knowledge here. several hundred yrs worth.

You made a fine deal if there are no major undisclosed issues...the price is fair for overall condition. Look to paintless dent removal for the cosmetics.

Follow the advise to check for the rusted mounts and the floorboards...just so you know if nothing else.

Fellow enthusiasts dawson & LuvMBDiesels have given plenty of great advise for the pre-road-trip checklist and a supply list for even the best Eagle Scout. Don't be overwhelmed or discouraged! A handful of the right size tools, spare fuel filters and fluids along with good common sense...are probably all you really need.

Toss in a jumper cable, a charged-up cell-phone, and You personally pack a picnik basket with a bottle of wine for the boss...stop along the way...

Its the journey that is important...make it an adventure!

Motor on!

Two more cents worth...

Heck, if you got any more cents from this forum, you could have paid for the car.

I got Old Blue at the factory. An 85 W123 with a triangle in the trunk lid and headrests. But what it does have is tow lugs fore and aft (look behind and under the bumpers). The states through which you are passing may not allow emergency car-to-car towing, centainly not on the big highways, but a super strong nylon tow strap is part of the standard kit in all the vehicles in my fleet.

Another note on rust. Fear thee not! Some additional places too look (again, this is from an 85 perspective):
+ Remove battery and battery tray. Tray might be shot already. Look at firewall behind tray. 10mm socket, extension.
+ Hinge pin recesses. The drainage downspouts are here and are often not maintained. Crud builds up, traps water, some flows into the cabin rusting the floors, some aids in the rusting out of the hinge recess compartment walls to which the hinge pin is attached.
+ At the rear of each front wheelwell is a plastic cylinder looking thing. This is the end of the second set of downspouts from the hinge/engine compartment. Again, crud builds up, keeping this area wet. Look behind these and, opposite, in the cabin, pull the carpeting away. There may be rust through.

Fear not, anyway. Silver Bullet, otherwise a cherry car and road rocket, had three rust-through perforations in some of the places mentioned above. Doctor MIG welder and some sheetmetal from another MB junker fixed it right up. I got a Lincoln 3200HD set that uses 120V 20Amp house current, with a CO2-Argon gas mix. Works GREAT. Wire brush, prime, paint. In the wheel wells use a quality undercoating and add an inspection of those spots to your regular maintenance routine.

Oh, before a month ago I never welded anything. Took some practice following recommendations in the manual, but anyone can get the knack quickly.

Again, fear thee not! With TLC and this forum, she will be a sweet runner. CAUTION! WARNING! LOOK OUT! After lovingly tuning up Silver Bullet, I now never get to drive her anymore...the commander-in-chief uses it for her personal staff car...sniff!

Yea, it's certainly not true, but folks seem to keep amusing themselves with that line of humor......
Fun and yucks I guess.....

If the car has only 140 thousand something miles. Also if the mercedes dealer gave the car a thumbs up as he claims you should be fine. Enjoy the trip home.
