Aaargh! My transmission needs a rebuild!
Okay so I'm getting quoted 1500 for a transmission rebuild for my 83 300d. Is this a good price?
It doens't really matter because I can't afford it anyways, but I'm curious. Is it possible to rebuild the transmission myself? For under...$500? Or is that wishful thinking? I'm stranded for now. Riding my bike and walking is overrated! help |
with installation? - yes.
yes. yes. that depends on you. |
Pull the thing yourself and take it to the shop. Its not that hard to pull the engine and tranny yourself. You could do it in an afternoon and do a little engine work while you're waiting on the tranny. Maybe a starter, an odd hard-to-reach gasket or something like that.

No need to pull the engine to pull the tranny. Easy to do and no special tools are needed. I pulled mine last week. I didn't even use a tranny jack. I just used a bottle jack and a bunch of wood blocks piled under it. I lowered it by pulling a few blocks at a time.

The car is already in the shop with the tranny pulled. I already owe them $350 for telling me what parts are busted and my options. I'm so worried that I'll give them the money for a rebuild and then something else is going to go.
If only I had skipped tuition payments and fixed my car. hehehe Are there any recommended books on mercedes 722.315 transmission rebuilds? |
I just ran into the same problem. The trans cracked around the B2 piston housing and parts were mixed and matched in another case (turned out to be a bad trans) and it made it 10 miles. If you plan to keep it I would reccomend fully rebuilding it or finding a good used transmssion at another location. which is what I ended up doing but got lucky doing so.

Good luck. |
Check with German Potomac. I just bought a tranny for my 300TD for $600 and it works well. They are close to me so there was no shipping charge though.
