*sigh* oil pan...
Cracked the oil pan on a speed bump today. (actually just an hour ago, so tonight). Wasn't going fast, it was on campus in a slow area... but I didn't know it was there, it's relatively new and I'm not back there much... so while I wasn't flying I wasn't down to speed bump speed either. For some reason it made it all the way out to the Parkway before it lost most of the oil... guess it was circulating and not resting at the crack... I don't know. I never drove it without oil in the block and I never drove it with no oil pressure. So no damage except to the pan. Trailering it home for the repair tomorrow.
Crack isn't at the seam of the pan, it's actually up on the face of the pan, maybe a quarter or a half of an inch above the bottom, on the front face, about an inch or an inch and a half long. My question is... I pulled up the parts in the "buy parts" link here. There's two gaskets listed. Do I need both of them? One of them? I have no idea. *sigh* - I really do TRY to be responsible. :grim: |
603 engine?
If you have the side sump, you will need both; engine to main pan and main pan to side sump.
I did the same thing two weeks ago. I got a pan off Flea-bay and replaced what I did NOT KNOW was a welded pan on the INSIDE!! The P.O. had some RTV on the outside and I thought that was it. Anyway, I have a 603 pan in King NC (just north of Winston Salem), If you want a good deal on a pan ($50, enough for my gas Raleigh to King and back) Let me know, I'll be in the shop the week of Tuesday to Friday 18th to 21st. BTW if you are doing injector work... http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/199772-calling-all-injector-diyers.html |
I am replacing my pan out of preventative maintenance next month on my 617. :D My current pan has a dent and the gasket is a bit leaky, plus I want to check the condition of the intake screen. (And will likely replace that for the heck of it too)
Perhaps I take preventative maintenance too far...oh well. :D :dizzy2: |
Don't bother relpacing the pan. I did mine and dented it on a bump the next week. :( A new shiny pan attracts damage.

I got the OEM pan + gasket for $34.....so it wasn't too expensive either. |
yeah, 123 pans are cheap enough, you could replace them at every oil change ;)
the 603 pan worries me too ESPECIALLY since my car is on lowering springs. anyone know if there is a metal skid pan for a 124? I have one for a 126 around here somewhere I may try to adapt if I cant find a specific one. |
Getting the pan off looks like fun. Your going to have to jack up the engine a bit.

There are...

I've hounded the dealership(s) a few times for it and they tell me it's for the 4-matic models for the overseas market (and might not fit a US W124.) |
