Rear fuel strainer

Im having trouble removing the rear fuel strainer from my 87 300D. Ive only removed the fuel hose, i havent been able to remove the strainder itself. ive used vise grips on it but it just wont budge.

Does anyone happen to know how whats the size of the hex outlined in the picture?

Also if there is any other way to remove the strainer please let me know, and ive done some searching but cant seem to find the answers im looking for

46mm. My fuel hose was stuck to the strainer so I didn't have to use the socket. It just came out on its own.

The size is 46 mm. 1 13/16" will also work fine.

You'll definitely need the socket if the fitting on the end of the hose doesn't rotate the strainer upon removal.

These sockets are all 3/4" drive, but, usually you won't have room for the wrench and will need to use a pipe wrench on the OD of the socket.

M/B makes a special, short socket with 1/2" drive for this purpose.

On my 300SD the hose was stuck on the strainer as well and it was easily removed. My W124 on the other hand is giving me the hardest time with trying to remove it

Ill have to go find the socket, there is very little room with the subframe and diff in the way but i think i can get it with a breaker bar.

On my '83, I knew the strainer to be completely clogged, and the fuel hose was leaking, so I cut the rubber off the fitting and used some J-B Weld to stick it to the strainer. They both came out easily after that. Obviously this is only useful if you're going to be replacing both and don't care to have the old one around when you're done.

hmm that might be worth trying, although im hoping just to clean the current on rather then replace it, the hose is still good doesnt leak or anything.

Try my thread

Within the last few days I posted a new thread with pix on how to R&R the Rear tank fuel screen to include making a short handle from shop junk.

If I can figure out how to reference the thread, I'll include it in an edit to this post.

Edit: this is the "proterties" value of my original thread:
W123 Fuel Tank Screen Replacement

Good luck. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Bought the socket from sears and had just enough clearance to fit the socket, adapter, and ratchet!

The filter was discusting, full of fungi crap. I guess the diesel just got old from sitting to long? I decided to remove the filter mesh so i dont have to go through that messy process again and just rely on the pre-filter as it is much easier to change then the fuel strainer. Also with the new tank of diesel i added biocide to try and kill off the fungi.

Here are the pics, your opinions welcome.
