1990 vs 80s turbo differences

Looking for a turbo to replace the one in a 1990. It is a garrett 2535 I believe. Will those from a mid 80s fit? I know the waste gates are different. Anything else?

No, it's a completely different turbo. The only model that will fit yours is a 1987 190D 2.5T.

Thanks. They are bit hard to find. I had rebuilt mine. Spins nice, but cant get any boost. I am replacing my intake gasket and will test boost again. Not sure why it wont spin up. Wastegates closed. Since I have no boost, I therefore get no more fuel.

Will a turbo from a 300D (87 onwards) fit?

i think they are computer controlled so it might not work with a 87 turbo.

No. You have a T25, the (real) 300D uses a T3.

I purchased an engine from a 1987 190DT to put into my 1990 300D and noticed a few differences. One, the compressor wheels are different and two you have to plug the boost line out of the compressor housing. I was also found that the A/R is slightly different .41 to .43. See attached photos.

It sounds like you are in "limp home" mode. The computer controls the wastegate on that turbo, and if the computer finds something wrong with the EGR, throttle plate, airflow sensor, or rack position sensor (I'm sure there are more) the computer opens the wastegate... so no boost.

Have you disabled your EGR or anything like that? Make sure all the vacuum lines running to all those actuators aren't leaking.

HTH!

I have disable teh EGR and afr. Not sure about the computer controling the vaccume on teh waste gate. Interesting. I'll pull the vacume line off and hold a vaccum with the might vac and give it a ride. Dont think I'll see any change though.

You're in limp home mode then. If your mityvac holds vacuum on that wastegate actuator (ie, it doesn't leak down), you might end up creating an overboost condition.... so don't drive too hard.
