That's awesome! I may just do that, since its cheaper than all the direct replacements. Where'd you get the cherry bomb and is it still going strong?

When I replaced the entire exhaust of my 84, I believe they all ended up being Bosal. I also sprayed it with high temp silver paint. Gotta degrease and lightly sand it first b4 painting so new paint will stick.

Get the 2 part epoxy putty. Roll it out in between wax papaer (or plastic wrap) with a can or jar. Make any size and thickness you want. I rough up the muffler with a wire brush on a drill. My seams and large holes are going on year 2 It's time to replace the system when it rots off

Those are sweet stainless pipes, but I'm liking the cherry bomb option right now for about $50. Either that or keep pluggin away with the JB Weld (no pun intended).

lose the stock system. Cut out the resonator and replace the muffler with something aftermarket, you'll cut 30lbs and it will be less restrictive. I used the aero turbine, but its $pendy.

Stock exhaust is not restrictive even at elevated power levels over stock.

What about the straight thru design of the cherry bomb? It's definitely less restrictive but maybe the turbo system is better off having more back pressure? Just a thought.

The muffler has been on the car since it was new - I have to wonder if there's about ten pounds of soot in there clogging things up, but MB probably thought of this (I hope) when they designed the system.

The stock is a straight through design. Cut one open. You never need back pressure in an exhaust system, the key is VELOCITY.

Still in doubt? Unbolt the system from the downpipe, go run it at the local strip. Then run it bolted up. You will not see any gains.

But its a little louder....which makes it Feel faster.

The stock setup is indeed straight through. I could see right through the muffler that fell off our 300D from one end to the other.

Placebo Effect?

So ConnClark is imagining any gains made by way of the Cherry Bomb setup, then?

Go to the strip and prove me wrong.

pawoSD even stated that it's straight through. There is no restriction there.

JB Weld & Heat?

Hm, well, I believe you. If the JB weld doesn't work out, I may have to bite the bullet on a new muffler either way.

I thought I could get off cheap by using JB Weld, but their site says not to use it on exhaust systems or anything that normally reaches +500 degrees F. I don't know if it gets that hot back there by the tailpipe, but I'm hoping it doesn't.

(Notice the fine print near the bottom)

My 85 cali muffler wasn't straight through and I don't think any of the 300SD 85's were. It also had quite a bit of soot in it. I left a nice pile of it when I picked it off the ground to throw it in the dumpster.

IMHO the resonator should stay. It really reduces the low speed drone of the engine and doesn't induce much if any back pressure.
