Winter Beater Bomb (WBB)

Well, I'm thinking I might pick up a "cheap car" to beat through this winter instead of trying to run a diesel this year. Found a local 1988 Honda Civic with only 61K on it. Was the kids grandmothers so it sat for a while. Comes with 4 snows that are relatively new and not mounted. All for $500. Gonna check it out. Just looking for something to get me to work and back, like 22 miles roundtrip, 25-45 mph.
Wonder how small and cheap it will feel after the benz....

That's a great little car! I bought one with 199K on it for my son to learn on and that's been 4-5 years ago and as far as I know some kid here in the area is still driving it! I liked driving it cause it felt like driving a go cart - sits low and has a wide stance.

I'd buy it if you don't!...

Stop and looked at it under the lights and it looks to me like its worth $500. I'll take it for a spin this afternoon.

Yeah those are nice little cars. Since I sold the SD, this year the VW will serve beater duty.

Fired right up. This thing is going to be fun, its like a little sports car! 5 speed, and I think its the 16V, 1.5 liter, 92 hp at 6,000 rpm motor. Put a deposit on it and I'll pick it up Saturday after he get the stereo out.

This will be nice, I can put the 240D (that I purchased of Jim and drove from Georgia in April) in my neighbors garage this winter so it doesn't see salt.

I told ja! They are fun to drive...you'll enjoy it.
I found that even my 6' height had plenty of room! When the seat is in the farthest-back position I felt like I was sliding down the road on my butt ! It seemed to 'corner' real well also...

Come on guys stop being so cheap. For the same money you could by a beat up old Volvo or somehthing that will take a hit with a suv and give you a better chance of walking away. Fun to drive yeah...solid as an old benz NO

Just out of my "paint booth"

Well what started as fix some rust spots turned into well I might as well just shoot the whole car, its small. Had a bunch of leftover paint, and yes I even clear coated it. Rush job as I want it on the road like last month but there hasn't been any salt on the road. I got everything back together tonight so I'll shoot some more pictures when I get some time. I never really got into the zone painting this car, especially with the clear coat. Its got some big drips which are going to stay "for now".
Well its done and I've got a spot for the 240D in my neighbors garage.

I Bought An '85 Accord with 180k 5 years ago for $300. Did some interior detailing, bondo work and got a 199.00 maaco job and sold it for $2000.00. The kid I bought it from wanted to drive his dinosaur 70's oldsmobile he got from grandpa full time. With current gas prices I bet he regretted it.

Little hondas and toyotas are great cars but our favorite winter beater for new england is an awd subaru. Out west where we live a couple miles off of the paved road on the ranch and the snow can drift over the roof we like a 3/4 ton truck and it is only good after the snow is plowed but it will bust a few drifts.

actually my 240d didnt do half bad in the snow if the only problem i could see with it is that its a manual, and even though it weighs a ton (almost) and only has 62 hp it will break the wheels free because of the manual. if it were an automatic, it would be perfect for snow.

Seems like most guys I know who are "snow drivers" (as opposed to those who HATE to drive in it) prefer a manual tranny!

I prefer a manual. Just my .02c!

I like a manual in the snow as I have a bit more feel of the car. Also, I can keep the revs up a bit. Then all I have to do is let off the gas pedal (I haven't driven my 240D in the snow) and it will slow down without hitting the brakes.
That Honda should go good in the snow. I had a 78 Civic 5spd. I did have a few problems, like going sideways at 45 mph. But probably bad tires and a bit too much speed for the road conditions. Plus the short wheelbase. Furtunately the car popped right back into the ice ruts. FWD will also help.
Tom
