Yes I searched, but I'm tired...quick question - where is my inline fuel filter?

I have a 1981 300D with a whopping 83 (or 88, depending on who you ask) hp that I absolutely love.

My poor 2006 Jetta GLI hardly gets driven anymore.

Sometimes, at higher speeds or on hills, my car feels like it's hesitating just a tad, not like a miss, but like something is clogged, or what have you.

From what I've read on here, chugging or hesitation can be chalked up to a bad/plugged fuel filter. I know there are two, and I know that the inline filter (the smaller of the two filters, and I'd assume the easier one to change) can get plugged up.

Where is this filter. I already know what it looks like, and what do I have to do to change it?

And yes, feel free to humble me if I deserve a Darwin award. It's late, I have work early in the morning tomorrow, and after searching a tad without anything rock solid, I'm making a whole new thread.

Here's a picture for views:

P.S. I really do need help on changing/locating my fuel filters, and I have no intent of ever putting restaurant waste/cooking oil/hype-fuel into my Benz, so worry not.

It should be in the vicinity of the primer pump usually on your year. If you can blow through it pretty easily when you remove it I would change the primary filter. As an afterthought the primer pump is located on the side of the injection pump on the drivers side of the engine.

That isn't me - that IS Mr. Lovecraft aka Brian Friedman himself.

God knows I wouldn't put that coffee filter-esque crock system in my car.

Don, if that is your engine bay, replace your master cylinder if you haven't already... it looks like it's leaking brake fluid into the brake booster.

Here are 2 pics of my inline fuel filter. Driver's side of the engine block.

Second image also shows the larger return filter.

I had a similar problem on my 82 300SD. My problem turned out to be a bad fuel level sensor/sender unit. I can no longer rely on my fuel guage to let me know when I'm low on fuel as it shows 1/8 tank when I'm in fact empty. At this point I know I get about 25mpg and I watch my odometer to ensure I do not exceed the capacity of the fuel placed into the tank.
