very broken Tranny ...

Check out these pics.

I have been driving my 300sd for about 25K miles. Right now it has about 230K on the clock. About a week ago it started making this horrible noise. Worse than any car noise I have ever heard. I thought that it was probably some sort of main/rod bearing. I started to take the engine out and went to take the bolts out of the bell housing of the tranny and this is what I found.

If you have the time check out this video(22mb) .. it shows how the TC is not connected to the flywheel.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this ..

Was that tranny a rebuild? I'm willing to bet who ever did the install did not stab the converter properly, or the bolts were not tightened enough, resulting in that damage.

Ouch

But, if there is a chance...hopefully someone good with a tig welder can get it back together.

Thats cast alluminum, the weld wouldnt last long. not because it wouldnt be strong, but because it takes Great skill with a tig welder, and setting up, any small thing that goes wrong would mess it all up.

For driving the car, yes. However the speedo drive is electrical rather than cable drive.

That's why I didn't say "...someone mediocre with a tig welder..." What some DIYers don't always realize is sometimes you need to oven heat the whole piece (after thoroughly cleaning it) and then weld it. Welding a cast/poured piece is actually an FAA approved/airworthy repair for some aircraft engine repairs. I had a friend who welded full time and I actually saw him tig two 12 oz. cans together - bottom to side in a "T" shape. They were both watertight. He told me he could do this after a few beers at a weekend cookout. Of course I didn't believe it so I had to meet him after work. He then tried to weld two unopened cans. That did NOT work too well. He tried to weld a Pepsi to a Coke but the liquid inside was too much of a heat sink.
