what goes "clunk" when i shift into gear (manual trans 240d)?

i get a "clunk" when i shift into gear and i can feel play (a tug or a seesaw effect that i can feel in the shifter when i go over a bump or let off the gas suddenly). would that be a transmission mount or something else? thanks.

Sounds like it. Maybe engine mounts too, could also be flex donut or center bearing on driveshaft.

YOu need to get under the car and start wiggling things.

any vibration in the shifter when you drive?

If so - check your flex disk from the tranny to the drive shaft.

Motor Mounts / transmission mount would be the first thing I'd check. Time to investigate!

is this a new clunk? most manual trans unless they are really new with nice strong syncros will make a gear engagement clunk. the movement does sound like worn mounts. don't overlook the center bearing if your car has one. *(on the drive shaft)

If the mount, flex disks or center bearing bushing have issues (cracking excessive movement etc) they should be replaced immediately. Any of them can lead to busted flex disks and that can kill.

replaced motor mounts a week ago and it helped a bunch (idle is silky smooth now and noise is down to nothing) but i can still feel the play. i'm going to do the trans mount next and from what i understand it is simple to go ahead and replace the flex disc. so i should replace the donut as well? what do i wiggle and where would "play" be in order for me to try to identify potential problems? what is the difficulty level of replacing the center bearing? any special tools? thanks all.
