w124 brake caliper woes....

I was replacing the common wear items on the front (rotors, pads, flex hose)

when it came time to bleed the new system in, I just bolter (loosely) the caliper to the bracket. Then a few pumps, fill the reservoir, few pumps....etc.

about two pumps in, I noticed a large puddle. Checked all connections (they were tight) and tried again. more drops. Upon closer inspection, it looks like the front seal is done - it's missing it's clip and spewing fluid all over. The piston is currently sitting out of the bore.

Is this rebuild able (all but the first few MM's on the piston are ground nice) or should I go ahead and order a replacement (I'd order an axle set) Also - Where would I get the best price on a reman?

You were bleeding the brakes without the pads installed?

Sounds like you might have gotten a couple of steps out of order.

yes, that's my own fault. ( I didnt want it to run dry....)

but it's missing the clip that hold the dust boot to the top of the piston - which is why it leaked.

I have never worked on a 124, and it would be interesting to see how they look, also to see what your calipers look like now...

fixed.

The w124 front's are a single piston floating arrangement. The seals were intact, and after cleaning everything went back togeather fine.

and "Speed Bleeders" work. well worth the $10 per set.

The dust boot is there to keep dust and dirt out, not to keep fluid in. If the caliper was leaking, there was another problem in addition to the dust boot retainer.
