Fuel lines to/from water separator
Hi everyone,
This is my first post, but I have been lurking for a while. I just bought a 1980 240D 4-speed manual. Gorgeous car in great condition -- not a speck of rust top to bottom-- from the original owner. Nothing power except the steering and vacuum locks. Has about 250k mi. Bought in California, and lived in Houston the rest of the time. It has several little issues, but the one I am struggling with right now is a split in a fuel line. This car has an aftermarket water separator installed by Racor - looks totally different than the housing of the current models, but its the same idea. There is an in and outlet line going from the water sep. to the prefilter, and one of these lines is leaking all over my A/C hose! So I went to NAPA and they have several custom fitted segments, but nothing like that (mostly from filter to injector etc.) The NAPA guy sent me to the dealer. Is this my best bet? Can't I just buy a segment of tubing and clamp it in place? Also, if I want to run bioD (when it finally retails in San Antonio ) will the dealer have compatible lines? Thanks to all of you on the board who have already answered so many of my questions without me even asking Cheers from Texas! |

thanks toomany!
So I know of an online retailer of viton, but where can I find it locally? It doesn't seem like any of the autoparts stores carry it. Who sells viton out of a storefront? Thanks again! |

Personally I've not looked for the viton lines, someone local may be able to help in tracking it down. I installed a Stanadyne water separator in the CD, came with lines and mounting hardware. If going to bio, be prepared to routinely replace primer pump, use the old style, they are less prone than the new style to leak, but will eventually. Good luck.

most good quality fuel injection lines have a inner liner that resists bio-D. (gates and goodyear, to name a few) this will cost more than regular fuel line, but less than 100% viton.
5/16 should work. use the good oem style clamps- you can get them most places as fuel injection clamps. good luck

Thanks folks!
I found some 5/16 and 7/16 at Advance auto parts -told they are fine for diesel
There is a goodyear place down the road, so I will try them for the better lines first. The 7/16 looks more like the tube that is leaking, but I wasn't sure - looked like it could be the 5/16, too - so I will buy some 5/16 tommorrow! woohoo! should help my mpg that's for sure! I think I can still use the clamps that are on the lines, now, eh? Is there any reason not to reuse them. They are nice brass clamps. I love this place |

Zeke, reusing clamps should work. Diesel lines are good for diesel, you'll be using bio, which is corrosive to rubber. I would assume new lines can take the "heat" tho. What 7/16 line are you referring to? All mine under hood are 5 1/16. Yes, your mileage will improve!

They must be 5/16 - The auto parts store had 5/16 and 7/16, and my eyeball ruler told me that I should get the 7/16 tube = but my eyeball ruler is pretty unreliable which is why I decided to wait on the purchase
I will try the 5/16 they have, and if bioD ever comes to town, I will consider upgrading to the $$pricey$$ ones! |

Viton really holds up well with B100, check out McMaster-Carr
go to http://www.mcmaster.com/ then enter item 5119K89 under search Although not a storefront, McMaster-Carr is one of the easiest (and fastest!) of the online suppliers I have ever used.

Thanks everyone! 5/16" did it.
I will use McMaster-Carr in the future, what a great vendor! I think changing the fuel lines even helped the 1-2 shift grind a bit (could be my imagination though ) |

Dayco Gen II, Gates and Goodyear 30R9 fuel injection hose are B100 compatable.
If you are trying to fit the hose barbs that have hard clear (brown) lines on them, cut the hard lines about 1" away from the fitting and use 3/8" hose slipped over the hose stub and fitting and then clamp them with fuel injection clamps. To replace the rubber fuel hoses, use 5/16".
