Hood ornament

Hello Group,
I went to install a new hood ornament today and got the old broken one off with very little problem, however, has anybody installed a new hood ornament? For the life of me I can not see how the new one goes in with out taking it apart. Is there a trick or a special tool, any suggestions will help.

Thanks
Peter

Drop it straight in so that the wings on the base fall through the slots on the grille assembly. Then open up the hood, and using a pair of channel locks, twist the wings so that they are at 90 degree angles to the slots. They should turn right around and lock the whole thing into place.

To add to this, you should see 2 "steps" on the base, that will seat into the grille hole notches. Before inserting the ornament the "wings" need to be seated on top of those steps, you should see a small lip on the steps that holds them there. Sometimes the retainer wings will slip off and spread out over the steps, and it won't fit in that way.

But it takes a lot of force to pull the outer U bracket. I just rebuilt one star assembly, and my hands hurt the next day. You're right, usually if you buy a new one they usually haven't jumped that lip.

Smile hood ornament

Thanks guys, looked at it again yesterday, I did have to hold it in a vise very gently and was able to line it up as you described, it fell right into the hole and gave the spring lock a twist and we are home.
Thanks again

Peter
