Valve Adjustment- Now it knocks?!

I did a valve adjustment yesterday on both of my cars. My 85 300D turned out just wonderful. Seems to idle smoother, more power, etc. My 84 300TD however had one of the valves extremely tight. I backed it off I would guess 6-8 full turns before I could slip the gauge in! Now I have run the car and overall it runs out smoother but that same valve has a knock/clatter coming from it. Most of the sound is at idle and is hardly noticeable at speed. Any thoughts or suggestions on this. I plan on doing a diesel purge...

I am also wondering how far a person should go with a "seeping" lower oil cooler line? I've noticed it for a while and occasionaly it will leave a spot. I was going to take the car on a couple thousand mile trip over the next two weeks but am unsure if it's wise.

Recheck the valves.

You shouldnt drive with a seeping oil cooler line anywhere... At speed it takes seconds to dump the oil and start finding a new engine. It is a 1-2hr fix at the most.

I'll recheck the valves once more.

As for the oil cooler line. I suppose you have to drain the oil to replace that? I just changed the oil/filter...

Last I checked an oil change costs less than a new engine. I'd get it replaced. This will give you an opportunity to get ALL the oil out of the engine and oil cooler and start with totally fresh oil without the old oil from the oil cooler gunking the new stuff up.

Now if you put Mobil1 in there, a new engine may be cheaper than an oil change

You can drain the oil into a clean container and seeing how it is new, reuse it. You might run it through a coffee filter before reusing it.

I ordered the oil line. I'll install it tomorrow evening. Now I have to convince my wife to take the car on a 2k mile trip with me!

I readjusted the valves on the other car and the tap is much quiter. Still there though...

It has been advised by experienced members of the forum that a 2nd adjustment is always in order after a few hundred miles.

Leaky oil cooler lines have been on my list of to do things for over a year. So they aren't going to explode right away, but definetly keep an eye one them

If you do a second adjustment soon after the 1st, can you re-use the valve cover gasket? I am getting ready to do mine.

I've never done a second adjustment....and they always seems to do just fine for the 12-15,000 we drive them between adjustments....

This Saturday both my car and the 300D get adjustments.

No, there is little advantage to draining the oil. The cooler line fittings at the filter housing are above the level of the engine oil. You will only lose the oil that is in the cooler and the lines; draining the sump won't change that.

When it comes to old hoses, past performance is not a good indicator of future results.
