A/C woes...

I recently took my 84MB300DT to a shop to get the compressor changed. The compressor was getting noisy but the system was still cooling. I immediately realized that the people working at the shop were severely retarded. I decided to let them do the work anyway since they were the only shop withing walking distance. I Pick up the car and the system is not cold its only mildly cooler than ambient temps. what could be wrong here?

I believe you answered your own question.
Find another shop, a reputable one, to diagnose the problem, Then contact the first shop with the repair bill.

I'm pretty Done with mechanics, sorry. All the ones ive come across have been complete idiots, with all the confidence in the world behind them. I would rather try to troubleshoot myself.

They are funny that way. Despite limited troubleshooting skills, they can immediately come up with a diagnosis for which they are 100% confident.

As an engineer, I can mull it over for a week or two and come up with a diagnosis for which I am 65-75% confident.

What's the deal?

That's funny - I am a scientist, and the way we tend to feel about medical doctors compared with ourselves is EXACTLY the same!

We mull and mull and come up with a conclusion we are pretty comfortable with - doctors never let the facts get in the way of a good theory

If you think about it, the two situations (scientist ->doctor & engineer->mechanic) are pretty parallel.

You're going to love this:

Many times I challenge the doctor.........the symptoms don't add up to the diagnosis which he's very quickly provided.

"You're not a doctor"...........becomes the favored expression and its put forth with the typical condescension characteristic of those that are cornered with nowhere to go but to hide behind the sheepskin.

You know that you're onto something when you get the statement, "You're not a doctor"..........keep going in that direction.

I just can't take people that are cocky AND stupid all at once. This place was run by one inbread famely. I walked into the shop in my Flight Instructor uniform, and the guy ask's me if im a Pilot. I answered "yes". Then the Guys start to tell me all about aviation and why helicocters are better than planes (yes helicOCters) and what happens when an engine fails etc. All with a logic that could have been excusable for an enthusiastic 4 year old. How do people become this stupid!?!

Then you certainly don't want to be a flight instructor!!!

(That said, I fully understand that the majority of flight instructors don't want to be flight instructors.)

Let me just play devil's advocate for a sec.

1. How much does your average scientist have to pay a year in malpractice insurance? Most doctors are so s***-scared by a lawsuit that they just do whatever hospital policy and/or convention and/or their drug company rep. tells them to do.

2. There are a fair number of stupid people in the world.

3. Some are mechanics, some are engineers (I work with them everyday), we are all stupid in our own special way.

4. A/C "experts" are known for their villainous and unscrupulous business practices. Most mechanics, and doctors for that matter, are assaulted on a daily basis by woefully uninformed individuals who just want their car/ body to work right and don't want or care to hear about why it doesn't.

5. Thats all, I can be monumentally stupid as well, just ask my ex-wives.

by the by, I say go for it, as far as fixing your own a/c. Its kind of a pita, but immensely satisfying at the finish line to know YOU made it work, when a professional couldn't.

It would be nice to see doctors and lawyers quit "practicing" and do stuff for real. "You are not a Doctor" they say as they write out another prescription for some drug they would not give to their own family members...

Anyway, fix your own A/C. It is not all that bad, and if you understand how and why something works, you can fix it.

I prefer planes over whirly birds. Engine or tail rotor stops, only your guardian angel can save you. With a plane at least you can glide and have a better chance of landing with out too much injury.

Fifty per cent of the people are below average. And in my experience, about 90% of the population will argue with that statistic!!!
