The only yard left in the Seattle area that has any sort of Mercedes gear is Aurora Auto Wrecking. There are still a number of 123s in the yard and they ALWAYS will send a yard attendant with you to inspect a part. A trust thing, I'm certain. They do have a large portion of the fast-moving items pre-pulled though. Never a friendly hello from the counter guys (what yard ever gives a friendly hello?) and they love their parts (translation...they're pretty steep). Other than them, Benz Friends at the North end of Boeing field, of course. In the 80's, there was a guy at the top of Queen Anne who had a large shop chock full of very vintage and often unusual Mercedes vehicles, parts, and pieces. The Old Benz Barn, I think was what he went by. I heard from a guy at Aurora that he locked the doors one day with everything still there and took off to South Africa. I remember seeing at least two W112 sedans in a corner of the bnuilding along with several dusty original 113s. Sitting out front was an old Mercedes hotel tour bus - OM-something. It had the alpine windows all the way around the roof with a huge sliding, vinyl roof section like one of the Webastos in the early sedans. When I get home, I think I'll take a drive by to peek in a window.

I have never had to deal with it, but from what I understand , Portland has the only shop, (or best?) in the PNW. I miskakenly separated one once and a list member had one stashed in his garage from a long gone 240, so he sold it to me cheap and save me a lot of hassle.

Loseing Benz Friendz (brick warehouse) is a huge bummer for Benz lovers in the PNW. Theres "Abb" at MBMW, or what ever the heck it is, on Aurora, I've gotten hard to get items from him. Anyway thats why I'm stocking up on parts cars

He's got a pretty amazing stock of stuff all packed into that cramped little office! Nice guy, too. And, he's open most Saturdays.

it boggles the mind what some "expert" shops will do... that is a piece of 2" pipe welded into the hardened MB shaft... and only partially welded at that... if you know the shop that did it. get it done right and have them fix it for free... otherwise, look up joint and clutch and have them put your ends on a NEW shaft section.

Ah, good too know, I've only had stuff shipped from him and talked on the phone.

It'd be easy to miss his place if you didn't know what to look for. It's in the back end of an old home, actually, and it's sort of partitioned from a fly-by-nite car lot on the front half of the lot. His portion of the parking area is relatively small by comparison but you'll know it when you spot what are usually a half-dozen worn-out 123's and 126's in various states of repair. To the left of a set of sliding glass patio doors is a set of steps leading to a door on the side of the house. Almost looks like a place one would have their palms read or something...which, for that part of Aurora, there's no telling. That door, anyhow, is the parts place. As far as his prices go, I don't know how he does it, but he markets largely OEM stuff at the most rock-bottom cost, I've found. I think he must be from the Middle East (not sure of his nationality) so maybe he has a line on OEM gear for cheap? He claims that if it has a good part number, he can get it and undersell anyone. If you get the chance, you ought to stop by there just for the experience.

Driveshaft shortening....

Any shortening of a driveshaft should be done on the end next to the yolk. Shortening in the middle will always fail (eventually). Has something to do with balance and whiplash effect. If you combine two tubes from different driveshafts, shorten on the end next to the yolk. Get an experienced driveshaft builder to do the job right....balanced and trued for runout...and you should never have any problems.

Regards

Run-Em

ALSO. Check the drive shaft angle. It should be more or less straight. What kind of transmission mount are you using? I lowered the rear of the engine using some think washers on the cross member and this helped alot. Also make sure you are using the THICK tranny mount. The thin one caused me lost of problems (broken flex discs, center carrier bushing etc.)

Talking Driveline update w/photos

I took a closer look at the piece that broke. The front shaft had been lengthened and a sleeve welded over the gap. To me, it looks like the wall thickness of the tube on the spline end is thicker than the end that mounts to the tranny (the end that broke). I think it's a case of shoddy work.

I think I'm going to start fresh with a different front shaft. I don't like the looks of the one I have.

Nice crack!

Sleeve

Thanks again for all your help!
