Thats nothing. Scrap all the lose paint and bits off with a screw driver, make sure its all nice and clean, than POR it. If you want to hide it have the local automotive paint store make up a spray can of your paint, tape everything off and spray the POR.

Good as new, cost well under $100.

Never have used this stuff but I plan on it! Seems like they have done their homework.

Rust Attack

My rust stopper of choice is Ospho, available at any automotive paint shop -- maybe $10 for a pint. It is phosphoric acid (do not drink), a clear, thin, liquid that I like because it's easy to feel like you've reached all the nooks & crannies. You can apply with a paint brush or put in an old Windex bottle & spray it.

The surface will turn a light gray. Wait 48 hours, repeat if necessary, sand & paint -- or just paint.

Wow! Thanks guys for all your input here - a lot of good replies.

I will definitely have to get on this, another 'project'...

I'm not toooo hurried though since I DO NOT drive it in the winter when roads are salty and wet, but I will get to it ASAP.

I do have a parts donor car that I need to check the condition of the battery tray. Chances are not in my favor that it will be any better than the one I've got though..

I have looked and can not see anything that even resembles a drain tube! Is this in the 'cavity' where the leading edge of the door rotates into when the door is opened? If so, that's prolly why I can't see it - I need a mirror and light!

I hear the woes about the battery trays, I've been scouring U-Pull-Its for years looking for one that's better than mine, but finally decided mine's not in that bad of condition considering.
I pulled mine one nice Saturday this summer, cleaned the heck out of it, used the marine clean and the metal ready and took a wire brush to it so the paint would stick, then painted on the Por 15. I now have a glossy black battery tray with significantly less holes, that's much more solid. And of course, while it was out I took care of my gaping hole underneath as well. I'm happy enough with the way it worked out.

That's great! Sounds like you are happy with your 'project' results!

I happened to stop into a 'new' indy shop this afternoon and the mechanic told me that he's fairly certain that NEW battery trays are still available...I dunno but I'll look into it sometime I suppose!

You can probably get a new battery tray either from Phil or the dealer. Put a battery matt in the new one and clean it out now and again. They only rust out if you ignore them for a decade.

Por

The POR products work very well, been using them for years. Just redid the battery tray. Use the Marine Clean first, really degreases things well. used paint stripper on the tray, then soaked it in the metal ready, it really gets rid on the rust if you keep the parts wet long enough. I have a Rubber made container that has 4 gallons of the metal ready I soak parts in.
If you use a wire brush on a drill to derust things, be sure to use the Metal Ready before painting. It etches the metal to give the paint a tooth to grip onto.
