New to Me 1985 300sd!!!
Well first I would like to start off by saying that this is the best forum I have been to...having rebuilt a Jeep CJ, CB750 Chopper, CB750 Cafe Racer, and a Kawasaki ZX6 this site is by far better than any I have joined for all my other projects. I want to say thanks for being here, and I hope I can provide some good answers in the near future. Currently if you have any SBC 350 issues or cb750's I can help, the diesel...not so much :-)
In true good karma fashion I gave away on old pickup I had to a buddy who opened a shop and needed a part runner, he in turn gifted me a 1985 300sd which by the way he didn't have when gifted him the truck but he knew I wanted one and went out to find it for me. Karma is good! I changed out the oil and filter, put in a new air filter, changed both fuel filters, cracked all injectors to make sure they were all getting fuel, and adjusted the idle to 750rpm. It seems to idle great, a little vibration but I think it's ok. I know I need to adjust the valves and have a look at the tank screen as well and that will be next on my list, along with brakes cause it's scary right now to stop but the turbo does not seem to spool up. This thing can't seem to get out of it's own way accelerating. After doing lots of searches here I have checked the throttle linkage and it has full throttle motion. What should be my plan of attack? Thanks so much, sorry for the long post but this place is sweet and I wanted everyone to know it! Matthew

Welcome to the forum.
The first thing to do for the complaint of low power is to find the line that is attached to the very back of the intake manifold. It's held in place by a hollow bolt.........commonly known as a "banjo bolt". Your task is to thoroughly clean that bolt and the banjo fitting that it gets inserted into and the Tecalan line that runs all the way to the overboost protection valve on the firewall. Then, you must ensure that the overboost protection valve is clear and also not clogged with soot. Finally, you must check the line from the overboost protection valve to the ALDA...........the square device with the round top that controls the fuel on the top of the IP. Once these lines are clear of soot, the performance of the vehicle should markedly improve. Please do a 0-60 time after you have performed these tasks so that we've got a baseline that makes some sense. Many folks that are new to diesels have some "unreasonable expectations" of a vehicle that weighs 3650 lbs. and has 123 hp. |

Thanks, i will add that too my to-do list and record a 0-60mph time after I have completed it. I know what I'm in for with this type a vehicle, I don't plan on breaking any land speed records for sure, but I know there is room for improvement.
