I have been waiting only 10 sec though for the GP to glow...and from what I'm reading I should be waiting abt 35 sec???Would that make a huge difference?? I mean the car misses and smokes till the water temp goes to abt 80ish C. After that it runs so smooth that you can't tell it's a diesel.

You should definitely do the valve adjustment.
Depending on engine condition and ambient temps when starting, 10 second glow may not be enough.
Mine still runs a bit rough for the first few minutes and I usually glow at least one full cycle when its below 50F. But my engine also has 250K on the clock- definitely not in pristine condition.
Please clarify the smoking issue. You said the smoke was black which means overfueling/incomplete combustion, but is usually only seen under load. Usually it's grayish on cold startup at idle.

yep the smoke looks grayish I gues. It has a really strong diesel odor, seems like its unburnt diesel to me.
I'm planing on doing a diesel purge and adjust the valves this weekend.
What would explain the engine to 'miss' though? I don't think just the valve adj. will fix it. but????????

If the valves are significantly out of adjustment, compression will be low on one or more cylinders, causing the miss until the engine warms up.
While you have the hood up, make sure the air filter is in good condition too.

I have a cold air intake..with a cone air filter ready to go in...
So sunday I'm doing my valve adj.
Now do I really need the MB 'bent' wrenches or I can get by with normal wrenches?
The reason I'm asking is that I'm in college and on a budget, and I would take my extra time with normal wrenches and get it done. In the Haynes service man. they show the guy using normal wrenches....
I know a new valve cover gasket is a must...anything else do you guys recomend??
Also should I align the cam lobe at 12 o clock by turning the PS or the crank??or??
Any other tricks are apreciated!!!
thx
Alex

Bent wrenches not a must have. A friend uses short ones, he cut them off so as to have room to turn. See if the old gasket is pliable, if so, reuse. The cam lobes need to be "facing" away from the valve you are adjusting. Some folks use the PS, some folks use the crank, my vote goes to the latter. A helper makes this a much faster job.
