I have Carquest KYBs on my 84D from PO. They are ok but no where near the ride of the Bils on my 85D. I'm just waiting for the KYBs to go bad (I may not even wait that long) so I can replace them with Bils. Autozone also carry Gabriels but I've already tried them on the 84D. Returned them after trying them out and put back the kyb's if that tells you anything.

KYB's are not a good choice for an MB - Japanese shocks belong on Ricers. I've had Bilstein HD's on my 300CD and Bilstein Comforts on my wife's 300SD since the cars were new and I've changed them about every 90K or so - I wouldn't settle for anything less. Phil has the best prices on the HD's right here on the site - I just got a replacement set for my 300CD from him last week, put them on last weekend - you think your shocks are doing just fine, until you you bolt up a new set - then you realize how the others had lost their umph.
Don't settle for a lesser shock, you won't be happy.

What is the difference......
.......... in ride between Bilstein Comforts vs the HDs? I'd like to try the HDs but am afraid it might be too stiff.

I dont know how the comforts can be anymore comfortable. The HD were a bit stiff at the start but once broken in there is nothing that isnt "Comfort" about them.

I like the HDs, but I've never tried the comforts. The HDs are perfect on smooth roads, they might get a little annoying if you have to drive on rough surfaces.

Who has tried both?
Looking at the Bilstein description of their shock - seems like I'd go HD (and I'm starting to get the itch to replace my shocks!)
My 300sd is already comfort enough

KYB and Bilsteins
Three years ago, I had new KYBs on my 81 240D, and new Bilsteins on my 83 300D.
Both were an improvement over the worn bilsteins in the cars. The KYBs were nice for the price, and I've also got them installed on my 71 250C, but the Bilsteins appear to have held up much better over the last few years. I no longer have the 240D, but my Uncle is still driving it, so I can still compare the two cars..... Bilsteins are worth the extra money, IMHO. I've never used the HDs, always stuck with the comforts and have not been disapointed. Jim
