Might not have been installed if the car was for California. A lot of cars in the US did not have block heaters. A block heater would be installed in a large opening on the right side of the block with an electric plug coming from it. If you have a large hex nut on the side of the block near the block drain, then you don't have a heater.

Try running the VIN through this site:
http://www.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng

It might list the heater as an option...

The story I have heard is that the block heater was a free option available to all Mercedes diesels. However, it was not always installed.

You will need to evaluate whether you want to be messing with the block of your car to install an OEM block heater. It certainly is well placed on the engine to transfer heat, but you'll need to take a lot off the car to gain access with a big wrench to the plug.

The easier option might be to install some form of after-market heater.

Just how cold does it run during winter in your neighborhood?

-30°C is not THAT bad, ... but -40 is COLD!! I don't believe even kerosene diluted diesel will flow that cold. I hope you park inside! or have a heater on your fuel tank!

There are after market heaters that go into the lower radiator hose. Do a search for them inside "Diesel Discussion" I think you can buy them through Phil at Fastlane...

I've got a coupon in the owner's manual of my '83 240D, Florida car, for a free block heater install.

I'm hoping I can get the dealer to honor it, 24 years and 3 owners later, just for fun :p
